Christmas At KAB

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the KAB recycling center not a worker was sorting, just ask the pesky mice;

An unwanted star and string of bulbs all aglow cast a warm light making even the shovels and brooms look nice;

Bales of cardboard and plastic nestled by the wall in hopes of being carried to a flatbed then on their way to Omaha;

No stockings were hung for the building lacks a chimney I tell ya;

Still, the staff wished boxes of Hefty orange bags and bundles of baling wire would soon be there;

Jesus and Mary, in a picture plucked from a bag, enjoyed the Holy night in a spot selected with care;

Three balers, stuffed and content under the heater’s warmth, waited to feast on Amazon boxes, wrapping paper and gift bags;

The shadows held potential presents galore, a fresh batch of paint from Highland Park just arrived adding to the supply even though demand lags;

Not quite Santa’s workshop yet at the sorting tables deft fingers perform an astonishing feat;

Patient people break bags tossing contents into temporary homes while keeping the space neat;

Tons and tons and a few pounds more flowed through the tired warehouse in 2024.

On the list for 2025? – continue serving a caring community where recycling has truly come alive.
