Council Weighs Prohibiting Skateboards in Parks

After concerns have been raised regarding the use of skateboards, skates and bikes in the newly renovated Sunken Gardens, the Alliance City Council voted to approve the first reading of an ordinance to prohibit using those items in the city’s municipal parks, except in designated areas.

The proposed prohibition came before council at their meeting on Tuesday evening, where they voted in favor of the first reading of the ordinance. According to the narrative provided at the City Council meeting, the concern was raised regarding the newly constructed Pillars and Sunken Gardens, after someone noticed skateboarders using the area.

“This, as are other features in our parks and public areas, represents a substantial investment of public monies which are not easily replaced nor cheap to maintain,” the narrative stated.

Staff approached the city’s legal representatives regarding the prohibition, and they recommended the ban be put in place throughout the city.

“Legal recommended that such a ban be established throughout the city, except in designation areas, so as to reduce confusion and establish continuity in enforcement,” the narrative stated.
