At 5:58 a.m., September 9, 2025, the Scottsbluff Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of Ave I and Highway 26 regarding an injury accident. Upon arrival it was determined that a 1995 Freightliner semi-truck and trailer was eastbound in the right lane. on Highway 26. The Freightliner had been stopped by a red traffic signal at the intersection.
The signal turned green and the tractor trailer began to move forward into the intersection. At this time a 2000 Red Oldsmobile Bravada was also eastbound in the right lane on Highway 26. The Bravada then ran into the rear of the trailer of the Freightliner.
The driver of the Bravada, Josh Martin Span, 36, of Mitchell, was found to be deceased at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was identified as Alfredo Chavira, 50, of Scottsbluff. There were no reported injuries to the driver of the Freightliner.
