Crusaders Conquer Crawford in Two Sets

After a second place finish at the Conference tournament over the weekend in Harrison, the Alliance St. Agnes volleyball teams were on the road again on Tuesday with a pair of games against the Rams from Crawford. Six big points from the Academy’s Delaney Jelinek in the final set powered the Crusaders to a sweep of the Rams. St. Agnes won the contest by scores of 25 21 25 20 to avenge an earlier loss to the hosts. Earlier in the day, the Crusader JV club defeated Crawford 25 5 25 22. St. Agnes now has a 6 and 6 record for the season. On Saturday, SA traveled to Sioux County for the Pan Handle Conference tourney with 9 schools taking part. The Academy bested Hyannis in the first round then down Cody to make the finals. In a 2 setter, it was the Lady Cats of Hemingford taking first by defeating the Crusaders.

Early tallies by the Rams is how set #1 started. Down 2 to 0, the Crusaders got a kill by Aubrey Dudden to stop the spree. The teams would then trade punches before a kill and a point by Alliance’s Kale Hulquist made it an 8 to 7 affair. Fine play then continued for the Academy with kills by Alexis Shelmadine and Dudden and a point from Addison Intermill kept SA in striking distance.

Three Quinn Robertson points followed that tied the match at 13. Play would remain even with the set being tied at 14, 16, 17, 18, and 20. During that stretch, the Crusaders would get points and kills from Dudden, Hulquist, and Shelmadine. St. Agnes pulled away late. An ace serve by Intermill made it 22 to 20 while the action came to a close with a kill by Shelmadine and 2 Robertson tallies. Final of set 1 St. Agnes 25 Crawford 21

Using the success for set 1, Alliance came out hot in the second. The Academy stormed out to a 10 to 4 lead thanks to points and kills for Robertson, Shelmadine, Jelinek, Dudden, and Hulquist. A point by Intermill ensued as the Alliance advantage went to 12 to 6. It was then the hosts who would rally. The Rams went on a 7 to 1 run that knotted the game at 13. The battle stay tight in the final moments. Kills and points by Hulquist, Shelmadine, and Dudden tied the affair at 19. A side out by the Academy sent Jelinek to line, down 19 to 18. The lefty scored 6 in a row including a couple of aces as the guests surged ahead by 5. Crawford would close to 24 to 20 but it the Lady Crusaders tallying the final point to take the set 25 to 20
