Dennis Galen Schoup was born July 9, 1962 in McCook, Nebraska to Carol (Klooz) Schoup and Clifford Schoup. Dennis went to school in McCook graduating in 1981. Through his early years into high school, Dennis loved sports and was involved in community Basketball and Baseball being a great pitcher.
Dennis worked in and around McCook area farming and doing tire repairs for Wheelers in McCook. Dennis went to McCook Community College and on to UNL for his degree in Wildlife Management. He did an internship banding Geese in Minnesota the following summer.
Deciding to pursue his dream of working for the railroad as his father did, Dennis graduated with a National Association of Railroad Science degree. Dennis then hired on BNSF in Alliance, Nebraska November 1998 for TYE department working his entire railroad career until his passing July 17, 2023 doing his dream job of being a switchman. Dennis worked with many different people throughout the years developing bonds with many. He also trained many of students hiring on the railroad through out his career. A true professional, Dennis focused on the details to insure the job was done safely, by the book, and perfect. Dennis was a man of very few words, yet many that worked around him enjoyed his quiet disposition even driven to make Dennis give a quick smile.
Dennis loved watching television; focusing on the oldies from Turner Classics, numerous sports channels, and anything history related. He loved watching hockey! Dennis was a die-hard Husker fan throughout his life. In Baseball, Minnesota Twins can’t be beat for Dennis. Dennis attended Baseball games in Colorado as well. In his “wilder” years, Dennis did a 10 day Baseball extravaganza watching as many baseball games as he and his friends could.
Dennis looked forward to the day less than a year away of going to Stratton, Nebraska to his family’s farm which they would go every Sunday when he was growing up supporting his Lutheran heritage.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents and sister Debra Schoup. He is survived by family members which include brother Keith Schoup of Stratton, Nebraska , Kathryn (Kevin) Goforth of Greeley, Colorado, Nieces Abigail and Hannah Schoup, Nephews; Nathan and Aaron Goforth

Hermann Jones Funeral Home in McCook, Nebraska in charge of the arrangements. Memorial services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 411 East 6th, Nebraska 69001 on Saturday, Aug. 12. Memorial meal at 12.00 Central Time, Memorial Service at 2:00 Central Time. Youtube live stream will be available under search “Peace Lutheran Church McCook”, click on circular church picture and select “LIVE”. Ashes will be in the columbarium at Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration in Dennis’s honor will be during the fall UTU picnic September 2, 2023.
Dennis was more than the super quiet grumpy old guy, every once and a while, a smirk would come about putting the recipient the star of day!
