Devona Eileen West Obituary
Eileen West passed into eternal rest on September 23, 2025 in Apple Valley, California. She was born in 1928 in Oshkosh Nebraska to Herman and Carrie (Kahler) Hayden. She attended Garden County High School and Central Business College of Denver.
In 1947, she married Daniel R West at St Paul Lutheran Church in Oshkosh Nebraska and a few years later they established their home in Alliance, Nebraska.
She was an active member of St John’s Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities on the local, conference and Synodical levels. She was a member of Chapter HS PEO, Box Butte Unit of Parliamentarians, NSAP, Friends of the Library, Hospital Auxiliary, Box Butte Chapter of Thrivent, Alliance Arts Council and Carnegie Arts Center. She served the community of Alliance as Welcome Wagon Hostess for eighteen years.
Eileen and Dan loved to go camping and boating as their family grew up and later as a couple. Eileen also enjoyed traveling with family and friends and visited places including China, Russia, Germany, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Italy, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Alaska and many other US states. In recent years she enjoyed cards, puzzles and dominos and especially receiving letters and pictures.
Eileen moved to California in 2014 to be closer to family and will return home to Alliance to be buried next to Dan as were her wishes. A memorial service will be held at St John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance on Friday, November 7th at 11:00 o’clock.
She is survived by sons Gerald (Anne) West of Dakota City, Iowa, Loren West of Apple Valley, California, daughters Karin (Bob) Tinsley of Apple Valley, California, Nancy (Tim) Borg of Westminster, Colorado, and Marcia (Mick) Shanahan of Clarkdale, Arizona. Grandchildren include Melissa (Cory) Peterson of Brainard, Minnesota, Melanie (Clint) Handley of Lisco, Nebraska, Danielle Shanahan of Mesa, Arizona, Alaina (Kyle) Seery of Golden, Colorado and grandsons Andy (Julie) Shanahan of Phoenix, Arizona, and Tyler (Jenna) Borg of Westminster, Colorado. Great grandchildren include Macy Peterson, Troy Borg, Luke Borg, Jackson Shanahan, Rosie Shanahan and Lilah Seery.
She is also survived by sister Judy (Don) Brockmeier of Eustis, Nebraska and brothers Douglas Riley of Burns, Wyoming and Eugene Hayden of Albany, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, her parents and stepfather.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to St John’s Lutheran Church Endowment would be a welcome remembrance or a donation to a charity of donor’s choice.
