Warm and very windy conditions greeted football fans on Friday afternoon for a contest featuring Alliance and Chase County. A four TD effort from Bulldog Trini Trejo carried Alliance past the Horns 46 to 13 as AHS goes to 3 and 2 for the season. The hosts led 16 to 0 after the first period then put 30 more on the board and took a 46 to 7 advantage at halftime. Imperial would score late but the contest belong to the Bulldogs.
Trejo began his big afternoon was a strong kick return that went to the 40 as action started in the first quarter. Quarterback Jay Shelmadine was the key in the opening possession, First Shelmadine completed a 12 yard pass to receiver Jackson Devlin that helped the Dogs continue their drive. A big carry by Shelmadine then followed that moved the sticks. Alliance then went to their rushing attack with big gains by Trejo and Caysen Robertson getting the ball close. At 7:17, Trejo scored from the 3 and following a good PAT play from Espen Lanik to Carson Swenson, the Dogs led 8 to 0. Solid tackles from Bulldog linebackers Cole Stoike and Nason Thompson stopped Chase’s first drive, forcing a punt. Robertson would return the ball deep into Imperial territory but a fourth down attempt by the Dog offense gave the ball back to the guests. Another three and out series by the Longhorns followed with Alliance getting tackles from Thompson, Ethan Schulze, and Robertson. Alliance’s final score of the quarter came on an 18 yard TD pass from Shelmadine to Lanik. The extra point was good on a pass from Trejo to Stoike. After one quarter of play, AHS was up 16 to 0.
Period #2 was full of big plays. After a Chase punt, Alliance scored again on a 24 TD scamper by Trejo. Robertson added the PAT and with 7:54 left in the half the Dog’s lead stood at 24 to 0. Freshman Remi Turman then recovered a Chase fumble that set up another Bulldog tally. Aided by a big gain by Lanik on a pass from Shelmadine, Alliance scored on a 3 yard touchdown carry by Trejo. The extra point was good by Shelmadine as the Bulldog margin went to 32 to 0 with 4 minutes left in the half. Alliance’s defense remained stout as Chase was forced to punt on their next drive. A Dog fumble of the punt resulted in the guest’s first point with with 2:39 remaining the scoreboard read Alliance 32 Chase 7. That score didn’t last long. From the 15, Lanik took the return to the house, breaking several tackles along the way. Alliance’s advantage went to 40 to 7 after a good extra point by Robertson. The last tallies of the half came after an INT by Dog Jett Herian on the Longhorn’s next series. Herian return the pick to the 4 and Trejo scored from there on the next play. The half came to a conclusion with AHS ahead 46 to 7.
Due to the 35 point rule, the entire second half was played with a running clock. This limited both teams to just a few possessions. Chase County received the ball first and were turned away thanks to strong defensive plays by Robertson and Thompson. Robertson would knock down 2 Horns passes to foil a comeback. The rest of the period had Trejo have some strong runs but no more scores. After three quarters of action, Alliance was still up by 39.
Period #4 saw a nice defensive play by Cannon Pfeiffer which denied a gain by the Horns. On the visitor’s next possession, a sack by Alliance’s Colton Johnson resulted in a 10 yard loss. Chase would eventually get on the board midway thru the period on a 61 yard TD run. A strong tackle by Alliance’s Holden Libsack stopped the PAT and the score stood at 46 to 13. The guests would recover the ensuing onside kick but a sack by Turman slowed down the momentum. Robertson then ended the game with an interception and the Dogs took the win 46 to 13.
