Doris Jean {Cadwalader) Nussbaum Obituary

Doris Jean {Cadwalader) Nussbaum was born on July 10, 1927 to Virgil and Rachel (Mills) Cadwalader. She was born in Lexington NE. She was the first cesarean birth in Dawson County, weighing only 5 lbs.

Her father worked in the Lexington Flour Mill, and her mother in a local bakery. Doris began school in Red Cloud NE. Her parents moved to several small towns after her father was injured in the Lexington Flour Mill. They managed several small town hamburger restaurants until moving to Alliance in 1948. Her father then went to work as a janitor in the old Emerson School.

Doris graduated in 1946 from Ansley High School. Her school activities included playing basketball and choir. Doris then followed her parents to Alliance. She worked in a small neighborhood grocery store. She became employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital for about 5 years and then as a dental assistant for Dr. Lyle Neff. She enjoyed the lab work the most.

Doris was married on February 12, 1958 to Edward Nussbaum in Lexington NE. To this union 2 sons were born, Loren Kevin in 1962 and Eldon Duane in 1963. Doris became a busy mother and wife of a ranch foreman. Her primary jobs included raising her children and helping in the homes of the ranch owners, which included cleaning. She tended large gardens and helped her husband with calving, feeding and other ranch chores. Her children attended Whitman grade school and Hyannis High School. They were in wrestling, football and track. Doris attended as many of these events as she could. Doris had the misfortune of losing her husband Edward on November 2, 1992. She worked in the Ranch store in Whitman NE for about 6 years after his death. She then moved back to Alliance, NE in 2002 and resided in the Good Samaritan Towers and later to the Good Samaritan Village. From there she moved into Wild Flower Terrace. In 2019 Doris moved into Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, NE.

Doris served as Past Honored Queen of Job’s Daughters as a senior in Ansley. In Alliance she was Noble Grand in the Rebekah’s. In 1938 Doris joined the United Methodist Church while in Ansley NE. While living in Alliance she served as Treasurer of the United Methodist Women.

Doris is survived by her 2 sons and their families, Loren (Laura) Nussbaum of Alliance NE. Their children, Tiffany (Jeremy) Gillespie, and their children Tanner and Harley. Victoria (Derreck) Warfield) Nussbaum and baby to be born of Alliance NE. Colton Nussbaum also of Alliance NE, Eldon (MaryAnn) Nussbaum of Rolling Hills Wyo. and their 3 children. Ben

She is preceded in death by her husband Edward Nussbaum, Baby Nussbaum, her sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Paul Lucas.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with Rev. Dr. Gideon Achi officiating. Burial will be in the Whitman Cemetery.

A reception will be served at the Whitman Club Hall after the graveside services.
