Bringing friendly service to those dining at Mi Ranchito in Alliance has been Patrick Elgin’s passion for nearly seven years. That quality was recently recognized by the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway.
On Friday morning, two past presidents of the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway presented an award to Elgin, recognizing him as the Frontline Friend of the Byway.
“The awards are voted on by our members, and our frontline award this year was to an employee in one of the businesses on the byway that gives back to everyone and welcomes the visitors to their businesses,” said Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway Past President Linda Lacy.
Elgin said the award means a lot to him as he works to form positive relationships with his customers.
“This is amazing,” Elgin said. “I’m really flattered. It’s awesome, and it’s an honor to receive it. This is like my second home, to be honest. I don’t see these people as customers, or dollar signs, they are guests in my home, and I try to treat them the same, and it’s come to show.”
Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway Past President Terri Licking said giving recognition is vital to promoting the byway.
“We have to recognize our own, because who else will,” said Licking.
Licking said the byway hosted its annual conference in Broken Bow earlier this month, which drew a large attendance. She said the next conference will take place in Broken Bow again in order to accommodate a vendor showcase.
The byway spans from Grand Island to Alliance and one of two nationally designated byways in the state of Nebraska. Lacy explained that the organization supports local businesses along the byway through tourism promotion. She said the awards and grants offered by the organization are voted on by members of the board.
