CHADRON – The Emerging Eagle Leaders program, sponsored by the Office of Academic Success and facilitated by its Director Chantel Merchen, will provide students at Chadron State College the opportunity to participate in a program that incorporates campus and community leaders.
The program, which is available for current sophomores and juniors, features 13 total workshops throughout the academic year. Most workshops are on campus from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and are activity-based. The various workshops will feature community and college leaders who will speak on topics such as goal setting, collaboration, building trust, understanding privilege, civic engagement, public speaking, and embracing failure. Merchen said students will also be collaborating with the Chadron Chamber of Commerce and job shadow different careers. Students who complete the year-long program will be recognized during a luncheon with President Ron K. Patterson and receive a cord upon graduation.
“I love this program because it gives students the tools and knowledge, they need to enter the workforce and be good citizens of their local communities. As a higher education professional, it is our responsibility to help the next generation become responsible citizens of the world, and I think this supports that mission,” Merchen said. “I also want to ignite a passion in students to help make our campus and community of Chadron a better place.”
The Emerging Eagle Leaders Program began in 2023 after Merchen noticed several of her student workers had similar questions and concerns about their professional careers following graduation. Throughout the 2023 academic year, Merchen and others led several sessions devoted to assisting students by providing them knowledge and experiences to benefit them throughout their professional careers.
“The program did a great job covering more than just the fundamentals of leadership. I recommend it to anyone who wants to develop personally and professionally,” said recent CSC graduate Porter Anderson.
Students who are interested in the program must complete an application online. Limited spots are available. For more information, contact Merchen at cmerchen@csc.edu.
