Educational Service Unit 13 (ESU 13) is pleased to announce the appointment of Derek Peil as the new Alternative Education Director, overseeing Valley Alternative Learning Transitional School (VALTS), Nebraska Educational Virtual Academy (NEVA), and Title IC Educational Program. Peil brings over a decade of experience in education and administration, along with a passion for serving students who thrive in alternative learning environments.
“I am thrilled to welcome Derek Peil as our new Director of Alternative Education.” said Laura Barrett, ESU 13 Administrator. “His experience in alternative educational settings, dedication to supporting all students, and commitment to empowering educators make him an exceptional addition to our team. I am confident that his leadership will strengthen our ability to support ESU 13 area schools and help them meet the diverse needs of their students. I look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on our programs and the students we serve.”
Peil began his career as an English teacher and coach in Lander, Wyoming (WY), before transitioning into administrative roles, most recently serving as an Assistant Principal at an alternative program and day treatment center in Cheyenne, WY. His background in Title I schools has fueled his dedication to working with at-risk students and creating learning experiences tailored to their unique needs.
Currently completing his Ph.D. in Education Leadership Policy at Texas Tech University, Peil is eager to apply his expertise in program development, policy, and student-centered learning to his new role.
“I’m most excited about the opportunity to design and tailor services that directly support student success,” Peil shared. “I’m passionate about meeting learners where they are and helping them grow, succeed, and feel supported every step of the way.”
Derek’s background closely aligns with ESU 13’s vision to achieve educational excellence for all learners and his experience in education and leadership closely aligns with the work being done in VALTS, LifeLink NE, and Title IC. His approach reflects the values ESU 13 strives to uphold—ensuring every student is supported, every program is purposeful, and every decision is made with student success in mind. His leadership will play a key role in expanding support services and innovative learning opportunities for students across the Nebraska Panhandle.
