For the first time, the Alliance Police Department has a Captain in its ranks after Kirk Felker was promoted to the position, being recognized for his service and dedication to the community.
Felker, who has served with the Alliance Police Department for 27 years, has been a boon to the department and the community as a whole, APD Chief David Leavitt explained.
“All of you know Kirk Felker, he’s been with the department 27 years,” said Leavitt. “He’s taken a bullet for this department. He has served this community in many roles: K-9 Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant. Kirk has been my right hand since the day I walked through the door.”
Leavitt emphasized Felker’s strong moral compass, noting that he has worked diligently to help Leavitt settle into the department.
“I tell you, when I got here, Kirk had an opportunity to do one of two things: he could either do everything he could to help me be successful, or he could make sure I failed,” Leavitt said. “He chose to help me be successful, and for that I will ever be grateful.”
The Alliance Police Department has never had a captain before, Leavitt explained, calling Felker up before the city council to have his badge pinned on him by his wife Tracy Felker.
“What you are about to witness is the first Captain’s badge for the Alliance Police Department being pinned on the first Captain of the Alliance Police Department,” said Leavitt.
Following the ceremony, Leavitt recognized other officers in the department for the meritorious service to their community with awards.
“Not one of these awards did I nominate the officer or the sergeant,” Leavitt said. “This is their peers recognizing their hard work; recognizing their dedication and taking the time to get on a computer, which getting officers to get on computers and do their work is a challenge, I’m telling you they care enough about each other and about seeing their hard work be recognized to take the time to type up these award nominations and see each other get the recognition they deserve. I’m really proud of them.”
