As we move into the time of year where severe weather is becoming more and more likely, I want to give you information that may serve you well in the upcoming severe weather season. Today we will talk about the dangers of flash flooding and what to do in such an event.
When people think about severe weather in our area, the first thing that pops into your head is thunderstorms and tornadoes. But the number one weather related killer is the flash flood. How strong a flash flood becomes depends on the intensity and duration of rainfall.
In just a matter of minutes a flash flood can occur if the rain intensity is strong enough but a flash flood can even happen if rain has been building up in an area.
Most of the flash flooding that occurs in the Midwest occurs because of slow moving thunderstorms or thunderstorms that keep hitting the same spot in a small amount of time. If you are in an area that may be prone to flooding, always make sure you have higher ground to go to just in case the water starts to rise fast.
While some areas are more susceptible to flooding than others, flooding can happen anywhere! And if you come up to a flooded roadway in your car, turn around and find another way to go. You never know, the road under the water may not be there anymore!
