From the Desk of the City Manager: Reflections for the Week of Aug. 9-13

Fire:

• Chief Shoemaker was reappointed to the 911 service system advisory committee by the public service commission when he attended the system advisory committee meeting on Wednesday.

Airport:

• Mowing is at the top of the list for maintenance staff.

• Began meeting for the upcoming rehabilitation of Taxiways and Aprons project. The anticipated schedule is to have an engineering agreement before Council on September 21, 2021, engineering through the winter and bids opened March 2022 with a summer completion date.

Police:

• Continued facilitating neighborhood meetings.

• Attended training to implement VirTra (law enforcement simulators) at our agency in partnership with WNCC.

BBDC:

• Working on Housing opportunity with High Plains CDC.

• Held coffee Tuesday with Alliance Police Dept. Sargent Felker presenting.

Museum:

• Our summer intern Bailey started working on the mural in the gallery of the Museum.

• Museum staff hosted the second humanities council speaker of the year, who discussed Jesse James in Nebraska.

• Staff hosted a book signing event for Kent Thiessen, author of “Back Stage”.

• Staff gave a 4-H award to Alya Foster, for the genealogy exhibit at the Box Butte County Fair.

• Assisted with visitors and on line requests for research information.

Parks:

• Continued to repair irrigation as necessary at the Library, Fountain Block, Laing Lake and Central Park.

• Mounted signs informing visitors that skateboards, scooters and bikes are not allowed in the Sunken Gardens.

• Mowed perimeters and did clean up at Carhenge. With summer staff returning back to school, we ask for the public’s patience with the mowing rotation now falls to full time staff in addition to normal maintenance duties.

• Cleaned up the street islands at 28th and Emerson and added that location to the spray list for 2022.

Golf Course:

• Staff aerified greens to ensure they continue to be in good shape. We will have a Toro representative out next week to troubleshoot irrigation issues.

RSVP:

• Attended a conference call as the first step in securing additional funding for our program.

Library:

• The final touches have been put on the remodeled rooms at the library- We are excited to host our first story time in the children’s room.

• We have been going through display materials and weeding them out. New displays have been put up in the Library to increase the circulation of materials.

• The staff has been busy cataloging the new Fall arrival of books.

• The staff is planning a “Book to Movie” Club in which patrons will read a book, and then watch the movie (based on the book) together.

• The half-price sale in the bookstore made room for all the new donations we have coming in!

Electric:

• We energized the new three phase service at New Alliance Bean Elevator.

• Started a new single phase rebuild project on Sarpy Road and Highway 385.

• Started a rebuild project on South Potash/South Grand alley area.

• Performed load management on irrigation wells as needed. We monitored the work that our contractor is performing on CR 63 north of Madison.

• Continued to perform maintenance and squirrel/bird proof portions of our system.

Community Development:

• Berean Church started their addition and parking lot expansion.

Administration:

• Submitted the CDBG Grant application for help in the replacement of the HVAC system at the Library.

• We were awarded a grant of 10 trees to be planted in the Homestead Addition.
