Gary Lee Piihl Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that I announce the passing of my beloved father, Gary Lee Piihl, who left us peacefully on January 10, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Alliance, Nebraska, on March 7, 1943, to George and Lila (Simpson) Piihl, Gary’s life was one of dedication, love, and service.

A proud graduate of Alliance High School in 1960, Gary went on to work with the City of Alliance Electric Department for over 40 years, where his commitment to his work and community left an enduring mark. His career was more than just a job; it was a testament to his work ethic, reliability, and quiet strength.

Gary married the love of his life, Karen Louise Sherlock, in April 1961. Together, they shared 49 years of love, partnership, and family. Their union brought forth six children, who were the pride and joy of his life. He was a devoted father and grandfather, whose wisdom, humor, and kindness shaped all who knew him.

Gary’s legacy is one of love and selflessness. He was a man who believed in the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the joy of simple moments. His passing leaves a void in our hearts, but we find comfort in knowing his spirit will live on in the stories we share, the lessons he taught us, and the love he gave so freely.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lila (Simpson) Piihl; his beloved wife, Karen (Sherlock) Piihl; daughters, Kimberly Piihl and Kelly (Piihl) Adamson; and sons, Kent, Kevin, and Kory Piihl and granddaughter, Sherrie Williams. He is survived by his son, Kirt (Stacy) Piihl of South Carolina; four sisters, Darla Hart, Sharon (Jim) Hansen, Jean (Larry) Smith, and Cindy (Dave) Stone; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

As we remember Gary, we honor not just the years he lived, but the way in which he lived them—with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved. He will forever be missed, but never forgotten.

Rest in peace, Dad. You have earned your rest, and we will carry your memory in our hearts always.

In honor of my father’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. I invite you to privately celebrate Gary’s memory in your own way.
