Garza Jr., Clarke to Compete in All-Star Classic

The Spartans senior team went 27-23 this season and made it to the championship game in the District tournament, where they suffered back to back losses to Ogallala for the District championship.

Coaches of the American Legion Senior B and C team nominate up to three players for the game. The eligibility requirement for players is that they are in their final year.

Spartans Mario Garza Jr. and Caeson Clarke were selected to compete in the 20th annual Kiwanis Baseball All-Star Classic on Aug. 6, which will be hosted in Wahoo at the historic Sam Crawford field. Garza Jr. and Clarke will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in one final game.

“I feel pretty honored to be selected. There’s a lot of good players in Class B and C and to be one of them is pretty cool,” said Mario Garza Jr.

First baseman Garza Jr. had a successful final season with 57 hits with a .401 batting average and 45 RBI scoring 28 runs.

Utility player Clarke had 61 hits with a .421 batting average and 29 RBI scoring 49 runs.

The All-Star Classic will be nine innings with a hitting challenge, team dinner. Awards will be presented after the game.
