Getting People, Horses Back Together

The East Point Horspice riding season is in full swing. We have to keep reminding ourselves that 2020 was a year of separation; it sure feels right to get the people and the horses back together again.

As the weather gets warmer, EPH is seeing many volunteers coming out and generously giving of themselves to perform some much-needed maintenance. The Memorial Day weekend allowed Brad Sherman and Kathy Worley, United Parcel Service employees, time to demonstrate community support as they helped repair loafing sheds and beautify the grounds with some artistically applied paint. Through their efforts, we got an answer to the old question, “What can brown do for you?” It is this type of unexpected support and contribution that defines the people who realize the importance of being there for others to lend a helping hand. EPH appreciates the continued dedication to the horses that UPS manages to muster.

A thorough spring cleaning is in order as EPH looks to Saturday June 26th for a scheduled open house. From 1 – 5 p.m. that day, EPH encourages the public to visit the horses to get a better idea of what happens at Horspice. There will be several demonstrations taking place in the arena, round pen and therapeutic riding area. These will include representations of the riding program activities, horse handling techniques and safety protocols, horse training demonstrations, all with an emphasis to introduce the horses to the public. These ambassadors for the program will be available for a well-deserved afternoon of brushing, petting and relaxation. EPH volunteers will share their knowledge and wisdom while answering any questions regarding the program and why they became involved. This day should prove to be a great peek behind the curtain of the EPH program.

In front of the Memorial Volunteer Center there will be live music to create a party in this pasture. At around 4:15 p.m. we will be honored to introduce Dr. Doug Butler from Butler Professional Farrier Services who will entertain with commentary pertaining to his view on cowboy ethics and cowboy code. Dr. Butler is a prestigious university professor with many years of experience in the horse world. He has authored many books and is well respected in these circles. His wealth of knowledge alone is worth the trip out on June 26th, but if your lucky enough to visit with him expect to encounter a great sense of humor and a genuinely kind, well-grounded cowboy.

EPH recommends visitors to the open house bring their own lawn chair, sunscreen and maybe even a broad-brimmed hat for shade. In the volunteer center summertime treats will be available to keep the heat at bay and keep a kid-like smile on your face.

Feel free to contact EPH with any questions. The phone number is (308) 762-3848, or email eph@bbc.net. The Horspice facilities are located a short 6 miles east from Alliance on Highway 2. Plan on attending as we celebrate the horses and people who come together to make this special event happen.
