On April 9, Governor Pete Ricketts issued an executive order waiving penalties and interest on personal property taxes, which must be filed with the county assessor, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
In the order, Ricketts notes the necessity of slowing the spread of the disease by “staying at home, social distancing, and avoiding public areas.” Before the order was issued to waive penalties, Nebraska Personal Property Returns that are filed between May 1 and June 30 would be subject to a 10 percent penalty; a 25 percent penalty would be issued for returns filed after July 1.
Box Butte County Assessor Michelle Robinson encourages people to file their personal property returns by May 1, but acknowledges the waiver of penalties.
“People still have to file by May 1, because the deadline is May 1,” said Robinson. “But the penalties are being waived for people who file after May 1.”
