Nebraska Army National Guard veterans Master Sergeant Cody Green and Staff Sergeant Pete Stout both recently received their Quilts of Valor in a ceremony held at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center in Alliance.
Staff Sergeant Pete Stout, from Alliance, enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard at the age of 17 in the wake of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks. Pete and Cody Green enlisted together in February 2002 and both shipped to Basic Training in June of 2002. Pete to Ft. Knox, KY and Cody to Ft Benning, GA.
For a majority of his eight years of service, Sergeant Stout was assigned to the 1195th Transportation Company Headquartered in Kearney Nebraska.
In 2004, he deployed with this unit in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Pete and Cody again crossed paths in April 2004. Cody was assigned to the 1057th Transportation Company and they were finishing up their deployment and processing out of Iraq at the time Pete’s unit was coming into country. During that 15 month deployment, Stout and his unit were primarily tasked with military convoy missions & the operation and security of a critical supply distribution center. In addition to the overseas deployment, Stout also deployed for several domestic & humanitarian crises, Hurricane Relief in Louisiana, Wildfires in Western Nebraska and Tornado Relief in Central Nebraska. Staff Sergeant Stout also proudly served four years on the Nebraska National Guard-Honor Guard Military Funeral Detail. This detail provided the final military graveside honors to Veterans from all branches of service.
Stout graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2008, departed the military in 2010 and presently resides in Kearney with his wife Elizabeth and their daughters Sadie and Hannah.
MSG Cody Green enlisted into the Nebraska Army National Guard in 2002, and attended Basic Combat Training (BCT) at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Bliss, Texas, where he was awarded the Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) 88M, Motor Transport Operator.
MSG Green’s military and civilian education includes the following four levels of Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Professional Development System: Warrior Leaders Course (WLC), Advanced Leaders Course (ALC), Senior Leaders Course (SLC), and Master Leaders Course (MLC). He is also a graduate of the following military courses: Antiterrorism Officer Basic Course, Small Group Instructor Training Course (SGITC), Foundation Instructor Facilitator Course (FIFC), SHARP Certification Course, Battle Staff NCO Course, Master Resilience Training (MRT), and Unit Training NCO Course. MSG Green has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from The University of Nebraska – Lincoln.
MSG Green’s previous assignments include: Vehicle Driver, 1057th Transportation Company; Heavy Vehicle Driver, 1618th Transportation Company; Heavy Vehicle Driver, 600th Transportation Company; Heavy Vehicle Driver, 1075th Transportation Company; Squad Leader, 189th Transportation Company; Squad Leader, Det 2 1057th Transportation Company; Instructor/Senior Instructor, 3rd Battalion 209th Regiment; and Senior RSP NCO, Recruiting and Retention Battalion. He is currently assigned as a Chief of Training with 1/209th Regional Training Institute Noncommissioned Officer Academy (NCOA).
MSG Green’s awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (2 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (3 Knots), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (2 OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Nebraska National Guard Commendation Medal, Nebraska National Guard Individual Achievement Medal, Nebraska National Guard Military Honor Guard Ribbon, Nebraska National Guard Emergency Service Medal, Nebraska National Guard Service Ribbon, California National Guard Counterdrug Service Ribbon, and the Louisiana National Guard Emergency Service Ribbon.
MSG Green is married and has two daughters.
This was sort of a “Full Circle” reunion for these two veterans as they both enlisted together in 2002, crossing each other’s paths while being deployed to Iraq and now being wrapped with Quilts of Valor together.
The ceremony conducted by QOV Panhandle Blocks leader, Kathy Dye was assisted with the American Legion and the ALR Panhandle Chapter 43. The group has recently surpassed 600 quilts awarded!
Cody’s quilt was pieced by Iris Cummings, quilted by Chris Wolf, and bound by Kathy Dye and Vic Bolek.
Pete’s quilt was pieced and bound by Cindy Zurn and quilted by Chris Wolf.
