Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday so to all the moms out there, I hope your day is absolutely fantastic with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. Unless you need rain, then I hope it rains all day for you! Regardless, this is the time of year that the weather can be pretty nice, if Mother Nature allows. On average we see a high temperature in the lower 70s and an average low in the upper 40s…if that happens that’s a pretty nice day! As we all know, any kind of weather can happen in the spring-time in Nebraska and that’s evident by some of the records that have been set. The record high for the month was set on May 22, 2012 when we saw 98 degrees. The record low was set on May 8, 2010 when the low dropped all the down to 14 degrees. That’s a difference of 84 degrees! Severe weather can certainly happen on Mother’s Day, too. Back in 1927, a massive tornado outbreak plagued the Midwest when almost 30 tornadoes touched down from as far south as Texas and as far north as Michigan. There was also a tornado outbreak on Mother’s Day weekend in 2004 in Tennessee, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Missouri. I’m certainly hoping we can avoid anything like that this year!

Forecast discussion for the week ahead:
Other than a small chance for a shower or storm on Friday, most of the next several days will be dominated by high pressure, meaning lots of sunshine is expected most days. Temperatures will be mild, too. 70s and 80s are expected for highs every day all the way into next week.
