While the NBA all star game is days away, all the future basketball stars at St. Agnes were on display on Sunday at the Holy Rosary Parish Center.
A total of 31 hoopsters took to the court searching the top prize as the 29th annual tournament took place. And when smoke cleared it the
White Hedgehogs winning first in the girl’s division while the Black Panthers went undefeated in taking home first on the boy’s side. The event begins a week full of activities at the Academy as the Crusaders celebrate Catholic Schools week. The tournament consisted of students in grades 1-3.
Team members for the Hedgehogs were: Sidda Wilcox, Raygen Kozal, Ophelia Baker, and Sloan Nagaki. They were coach by Peyton Baker, Jett Childers, Amora Gonzalez, and Hannah Benzel. Taking home second were Blue Walleyes coached by Mason Hamilton and Devin Graham. Playing for the Walleyes were Peyton Lauder, Veronica Benzel, Raegan Mulhern, and Raya Beck. Also on the girl’s side were the Pink Champions whose members were: Hayden Kozal, Corinne McClary, Arya Shelmadine, and McKenzie Conyers. Coaching the Champions were Delaney Jelinek and Aubrey Dutton. The final team participating were the Black Wolves and their members were Marlie Salcido, Willow Hampton, Allie Armstrong, and Vivian Oligmueller. Coaches were Jackson Devlin and Tanner Salcido.
In the boy’s division the Black Panthers finished first with a perfect 5 and 0 record with Kian Richey, Chief Cody, and Anthony Gonzalez as its members.
Coaching the Panthers were Ande Girard and Hadley Shrewsbury. Placing second were the Red Mambas coached by Mason Conyers, Tatum Devlin, and Quinton Schroth. Red Mambas were comprised of Gabriel McClary, Landon Schroth, Tucker Hulquist, and Canton Devlin.
The Blue Americans also took part in the event and their coaches were Reese Armstrong, Stella Beck, Maslin Breen, and Aubree Shrewsbury.
Team members: Sawyer Benigno, Luka Beck, Deacon Shelmadine, and Tyce Johnson. Rounding out the boy’s side were the Gray Elephants whose coaches were Grayson Dibrito, Phoenix Red Nest, Paxton Richey, Cisco Cody, and Tripp Johnson. The Elephants had Andre Estevane-Acosta, Sylvan Vergil, Parker Gumm, and Hickox as its team.
The event capped off the three week clinic put on by St. Agnes coach/teacher Mark Glesinger.
Glesinger said, “Some very close and exciting games! Many thanks go out to all the older students who help with the games, to Kevin and Gary who helping clear the sidewalks, and to the Armstrong who donated the drinks for the kids! Thanks to all.”
