Hemingford Man Dies in Custody

A Hemingford man who began serving a prison sentence less than one month ago died while in custody at a hospital in Lincoln.

According to court records, David Munsey, who was sentenced to 12-24 years in prison, was found guilty on three counts of possession of child pornography, each a class 2A felony. He began serving his sentence on July 14.

On Aug. 12, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services issued a press release noting that an inmate who was sentenced in Box Butte County for possession of child pornography died at a hospital.

The press release stated that the man had tested positive for COVID-19 prior to being hospitalized, noting that he had underlying health conditions. The cause of death has not been determined, though a grand jury will conduct an investigation, which is the case whenever an inmate dies in custody of the NDCS.

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services online records confirm that Munsey was released from custody on Aug. 13, with the reason for release being that he is deceased.
