Seventh graders Kale Hulquist and Penn Vergil each had 12 points on Saturday for St Agnes in a 32 to 14 win over Hyannis. The game was played in Alliance. With the victory , the Crusaders go to 2 and 3 on the season. Hyannis won the late JV contest, outlasting the hosts 9 to 8 in a 2 quarter battle. In the varsity match up, the Academy’s defense was solid in periods 2 and 3 as the Longhorns were held scoreless. The third was big for Alliance with SA out scoring the guests 15 to 0.
Points were plentiful in the first with Hyannis tallying 10 and the Academy netting 8. The affair was tied at 2, 4, 6, and 8 with a late hoop by the Horns giving the visitors a 10 to 8 lead heading to the second. Alliance got 4 points by Vergil in the period while Hulquist and Natalie Mullen each had a hoop. Action slowed in quarter #2. Hyannis went scoreless while buckets by Vergil and Hulquist gave the Academy a slight advantage. After 2 , the Lady Crusaders led 12 to 10.
Four St Agnes players would get into the scoring column in the third. A Mullen score made it 14 to 10. Alliance got 5 points from the free throw line to pull away. Two free throws apiece by Vergil and Hulquist gave the hosts a nice lead. Alexis Shelmadine rounded out the scoring for SA in the period as the Alliance guard added 3 tallies. After three, the Crusaders were up 27 to 10. The Academy closed out the contest by out scoring Hyannis 5 to 4 in the finale. Alliance got 2 more baskets by Hulquist and a Shelmadine free throw. In the junior varsity game, a late rally by Hyannis gave the guests a 9 to 8 W. Early buckets by Mullen and a 2 pointer by Addison Intermill helped the Crusaders take a 6 to 3 after period one. A hoop by Nala Reza later in the second helped SA maintain their cushion. Down 8 to 5, the Horns would score the game’s last four points and getting the one point win. Final. Hyannis 9 SA 8
