The Alliance Public Library will host the Humanities Nebraska live music program “All Original, All Nebraska,” by Dan Holtz and Gary Zalud on Thursday, August 29th at 6:30pm in the Alliance Public Library Rose Garden.
In “All Original, All Nebraska” the duo brings Nebraska history alive through their acoustic-electric renditions of Holtz’s story songs. This presentation is made possible by Humanities Nebraska, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and the Alliance Public Library Foundation as part of the HN Speakers Bureau.
Holtz and Zalud, whose musical collaboration go back to their days growing up in Ord, NE, now perform as “Flatwater Reunion,” after recently re-connecting. They played together in a musical group named “Calico,” nearly 50 years ago.
Dr. Holtz is a Peru State Emeritus Professor of English; Dr. Zalud is Emeritus Professor of Literacy Education and was the longtime Chair of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. In the year 2000, Holtz was the recipient of the Nebraska State College System Teaching Excellence Award and has given more than 500 musical, historical-storytelling programs statewide through the sponsorship of Humanities Nebraska. Zalud received the USD School of Education 2015-16 Excellence in Service award for impactful work with school districts in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wyoming and Iowa.
Speakers are available to any non-profit organization in Nebraska. Each program lasts 30 minutes to an hour, plus a question-and-answer period. The most frequent users of the HN Speakers Bureau are primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, libraries, museums and historical societies, agencies for the elderly, rural organizations, churches, arts organizations and ethnic organizations. Humanities Nebraska sponsors the largest Speakers Bureau program in the U.S. according to the National Endowment for the Humanities.
