KCOW’s Canon and the Cornhuskers Cannon

It was a tough loss for the Alliance Bulldogs football team this past Friday night.

The Dawgs traveled to Phelps County and ran into a buzzsaw.

The Dusters prevailed, 43-15.

The highlight of the game?

Listening to KCOW’s new sports announcer Canon Rath.

Yes, that’s Canon with one n.

Canon is a very young broadcaster, but already a pro.

He has a wonderful voice and paints a very clear picture for the listener.

Canon is a native of Kearney and resides in North Platte. He is the news director for one of Eagle Communications radio stations.

He travels to Alliance and the Bulldogs opposing towns to announce the games.

Your chances of meeting him may be limited, but we all have favorite sports announcers for colleges and the pros that we never meet.

Canon is a Cornhusker through and through. He will play audio clips of past Nebraska games during his 30-minute pre-game show.

Yeah, he reminds me of me.

I look forward to listening to Canon again this Friday night when Alliance travels to Gering for a Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs battle.

It is my firm belief that the Cornhuskers cannon was the 86,906 fans who jammed Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

Nebraska destroyed the Buffaloes 28-10.

NU led at halftime 28-0.

The red-hot crowd lit the fuse that ignited the Cornhusker cannon, that blew Ralphie meat all the way back to Boulder.

This game reminded me so much of the 1992 Halloween Day blowout when NU beat the Buffs, 52-7.

On a rainy afternoon, Colorado’s Koy Detmer threw an interception on the first play of the game and Nebraska set up camp at the CU 15. A few plays later, Calvin Jones scored on a three-yard-run and the onslaught had begun.

The only disappointing part of Saturday night’s showdown was that Nebraska did not score in the second half.

I had predicted on the Husker Hounds facebook page that NU would slam the overhyped puff fluffs, 52-10. At halftime, I thought the Big Red was halfway there.

I had a good time Friday night in Hemingford watching the Bobcats beat Hyannis, 64-14.

The Hemingford offense sliced through the Longhorns like a hot knife through butter.

There is a taste of county government with the Bobcats

Quarterback Cody Galles’ mama works for the Sheriff’s office, Ryan Ragsdale’s mama works with the District Court and the Bell boys, Gavin and Gattlen, their mama is the County Treasurer.

All the best to these fine players and their teammates when they travel to Bayard this Friday night.
