A pair of evenly matched teams met Tuesday in Alliance in girl’s basketball action. Scoring the game’s final 13 points, it was the hometown Bulldogs getting the win 46 to 35 over the Lady Mustangs of Gordon/Rushville. The guests led 35 to 33 with under 5 minutes left in the contest before the Dogs rallied for their fourth victory on the year. Alliance also was victorious in the JV ball game. It took overtime but the Bulldogs held on for a 42 to 40 win. Junior Paz Cody was the leading scorer in the varsity game with 11 points while adding 9 was Reese Armstrong. AHS led by 6 at half and after the third but a big spree by GR at the start of the fourth helped the guests take a brief lead. A Cody three put the Dogs ahead. It was followed by a bucket by Armstrong as the hosts pulled away.
Alliance’s defense was stout in the first period. Gordon/Rushville was held to just 3 first quarter tallies. Three early points by Alliance’s Brooke Bailey tied the game at the five minute mark. AHS then got a three by Brinlee Lanik and 2 free throws by Armstrong to surge ahead. After one period of play, the Bulldogs were up 8 to 3.
Five Cody tallies in the second kept the hosts out in front. The second started with an Armstrong deuce and a Mustang two. Three straight by Cody ensued as the Dogs extended their advantage to 8 at 13 to 5. Following a basket by the visitors, Alliance got back to back hoops by KiKi Adams and Cody that made it 17 to 7. The quarter finished with another score by Adams and 2 three pointers by the guest. After one half of play, Alliance was out in front 19 to 13.
Both clubs would put 13 points in the column in the third. Gordon sank three 3 pointers in the period to keep close. A Mustang trey was answered by a 3 ball by Lanik that kept the guest’s deficit at 6.
The teams again exchanged threes with Armstrong nailing one for the Dogs.
At the 5 minute stage, a bucket by Alliance’s Olivia Krejci increased their margin to 8. Back came the guests, scoring 5 in a row to get within 3.
Alliance finished the third with a score by Addison Weber and a three by Cody. The board would read after three quarters of action Alliance 32 Gordon/Rushville 26.
A 9 to 1 spurt by the visitors in the early moments of quarter #4 gave the Mustangs a 2 point lead. Weber had the lone tally for the Dogs during the run. All Alliance for the rest of the game as the Bulldogs ended the game on a 13 to 0 spree. It began with a 2 by Bailey that tied the game at 35. Cody followed with a 3 and, after a hoop by Armstrong, AHS surged ahead by 5. Baskets in the late stages by Weber and Bailey finished the affair with Alliance getting the W 46 to 35.
