Lady Crusaders End Volleyball Season with Victories over Lions, Mustangs, and Longhorns

A very successful year came to a close for the Alliance St. Agnes volleyball club with wins over Morrill, Gordon/Rushville, and Hyannis last week. The Crusaders capped another super season with an 11 and 3 record. St. Agnes also a nice ending for their JV team with 3 straight wins over the Lions, Mustangs, and Longhorns.

On Monday, SA hosted Morrill in their final home matchup for the year. The Crusader varsity game was all Alliance. SA surged ahead 12 to 3 and cruised to a 25 to 8 win in the opening set. An early kill by Crusader Delaney Jelinek got Alliance off to a good start. It was followed by 3 points off the serve of SA’s Reese Armstrong that put St. Agnes out in front 4 to 0. Later in the set, Alliance got 3 points in a row from Aubrey Dudden as their lead grew to 9 to 2. St. Agnes’s advantage then grew to 18 to 5 with points coming from Alliance’s Aubree Shrewsbury and kills by Jelinek and Armstrong. The set then came to an end with points and kills by Armstrong and an ace serve by Crusader Stella Beck. Set one went to SA 25 to 8.

Play was closer in set #2. St. Agnes was down by 2 before ace spikes by Maslin Breen gave the momentum back to the Crusaders. Two more points by Dudden including an ace put SA ahead 6 to 4. With the score 8 to 6 in favor of Alliance, Shrewsbury helped the hosts pull away with 3 consecutive points to push the margin to 5. Crusader Alexis Shelmadine then went to the serving line and tallied 3 in a row as SA moved ahead 16 to 8. The teams would then trade scores with St. Agnes getting a pair of kills by Breen. Set 2 came to a finish with St. Agnes pulling away with big plays by Breen, Armstrong, and Kale Hulquist. Final St. Agnes 25 Morrill 15

The Lions came out strong in set #1 in the JV game. Morrill led 7 to 4 before a big run by the Crusaders made the contest close. Scoring plays by Hulquist and Quinn Robertson kept the game tight in the early moments. Down 3, St Agnes’ Penn Vergil tied the matchup at 12 with three straight ace serves later in the set. Helped by strong play by Hulquist, Vergil scored three more as Alliance surged ahead. The set came to a close with SA getting scoring plays by Beck and Hulquist. The opening set went to Allaince 25 to 16.

With Robertson at the serving line, SA got off to a super start in set 2. Six points by Robertson including 4 aces gave the hosts an early lead. It was then Hulquist’s turn. Two points by the Crusader pushed SA’s margin to 10 to 3 later in the set. The teams then trade tallies with Alliance getting scores from Shelmadine and Jamisyn Rasmussen. Three straight by Vergil then ensued that put Alliance ahead 18 to 7. Ahead 19 to 9, 5 consecutive points by Robertson salted the set away. Set 2 Alliance 25 Morrill 10

The wins continued for Alliance on Tuesday with an away contest versus Gordon/Rushville

SA won the varsity game 25-16 25-12 and the JV battle 25-17 25-14

On Thursday, SA traveled to Hyannis and downed the Horns both in the varsity and JV games. The varsity game went 25 to 11 and 25 to 12 in the varsity game. Stats Armstrong 17 points 1 kill Breen 9 points and 3 kills Jelinek 4 points Dudden 6 points

St. Agnes also got the W in the Junior Varsity game, defeating Hyannis 25-18 26-24
