The Alliance St. Agnes Junior High basketball team traveled Monday to Hemingford for a pair of contests. Alliance used a strong second half defensively and downed the Bobcats 30 to 19. The Crusaders held the hosts to just 4 second half points and pulled away for the win. For the year St. Agnes improved to 7 and 2. In the earlier game it was Hemingford winning a two quarter battle 4 to 3 in JV action. The contest was limited to just 2 periods due to lack of players for the Crusaders. St. Agnes dropped to 4 and 3 on the junior varsity season.
Points came fast and furious in the opening quarter. Four points each by Alliance’s Hannah Benzel and Maslin Breen helped the Crusaders get off to a solid beginning. Five points by Crusaders seventh grader Reese Armstrong concluded the scoring. Heading to the second it was Alliance ahead 13 to 10. The hosts would then outscore the Crusaders in the second period but by just one points. Baskets by Armstrong and Aubree Shrewsbury would account for the Alliance scoring. At halftime the Crusader lead was just 17 to 15.
Hemingford would just score 2 points in the third as the Lady Crusaders pulled away. Three Breen free throws and hoop plus another bucket by Armstrong helped Alliance outscore the Bobcats 7 to 2 in the period. St. Agnes took a 24 to 17 advantage heading to the fourth. Points again would be tough for the Lady Cats in the final period. Hemingford could only muster 2 points while Alliance got 6. Five Crusaders found the scoring column led by seventh graders Armstrong and Breen who tallied 11 and 9 points. Adding 6 was Benzel while finishing with 2 apiece were Shrewsbury and Baker.
In the first contest it was the hosts scoring 4 first period points and holding on for a 4 to 3 victory. The game consisted of just 2 quarters. Alliance would get 2 points by Dawsyn Higgins and 1 from Baker.
