Late Rally Helps St. Agnes’ Girls Claim Third Straight Conference Track Championship

Big points in the high jump, pole vault, and triple jump powered the St. Agnes girls in Friday’s Pan Handle Conference meet in Morrill. The Lady Crusaders scored 22 points in the high jump, 18 in the pole vault, and 18 more in the triple jump to overtake Hemingford in claiming their third straight conference title. Overall, the Academy ended the day with 131 points with the Cats second at 92.33 in the 9 school team race. The format was different with the running events first followed by the field events. Hemingford was up big after the 10 running events but major points in the final 6 field events gave the Crusaders the crown. St. Agnes had 6 first place finishers. Two Crusaders claimed a pair of gold medals.

Alexis Shelmadine was first in both the 100 hurdles and set a new school record in the pole vault with a winning mark of 8’9. Penn Vergil also had a big day, taking first in both the long jump and 400. Eighth graders Reese Armstrong and Maslin Breen were blue ribbons finishers. Armstrong won the 200 and Maslin was first in the high jump.

In the boy’s division, St. Agnes was third with 92 points. Hemingford won the team title with 141 points with Hay Springs second at 103 points. The Academy won one gold medal performance in the mile relay with a time of 4:18. Team members: Cisco Cody Braden Myers Tripp Johnson and Paxton Richey. Silver medal performers for the Crusaders were: Myers in 200, Cody in the 400 and triple jump, and Johnson in the 800.

The Crusaders will go to Scottsbluff on Saturday and end their year at Gering on Saturday, May 10.
