Law Enforcement Searches for Salway

Law enforcement is on the lookout and asking for assistance in locating Harley Salway III, who was released from jail without posting bond.

The Alliance Police Department posted a notice to social media last week, advising that he may be in the area following his inadvertent release.

“Officers and Deputies believe he may be in Alliance or Scottsbluff. Harley is described as a white male, gray hair, hazel eyes, 6’01” and approximately 165 pounds,” the post stated.

The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office offered clarification of the situation with a social media post of their own, thanking area law enforcement for their efforts to locate Salway. They asked for public cooperation.

“In the rapidly evolving landscape of law enforcement, situations occasionally arise that require the collaboration of multiple agencies. The BBCSO expresses gratitude towards the Scottsbluff County Sheriff’s Office for lending support to smaller agencies when needed. This collaboration is essential in ensuring resources are available for housing and services that may exceed the capacities of smaller law enforcement agencies. This incident involving the unintended release of Harley Salway III, clarifying that the responsibility for this incident does not rest with the Scottsbluff County Sheriff’s Office. BBCSO failed to inform Scottsbluff County of another case in which Salway was still remanded to law enforcement custody with a bond order in place. BBCSO emphasizes the importance of public understanding regarding the complexities of law enforcement operations and the need for community support rather than blame,” the post stated.

They advised citizens to contact law enforcement with any information that may lead to Salway’s capture, asking for continued support of law enforcement agencies in their work.

“The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office is urging citizens to continue their support for law enforcement and corrections officers. The statement underscores the challenging nature of the work undertaken by these professionals, work that often goes unnoticed by the general public. To ensure the swift apprehension of Harley Salway III, the BBCSO has provided direct contact information for citizens to report any tips. Individuals can contact the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office at (308) 762-6464 or the Alliance Police Department at (308) 762-4955. Any information leading to Salway’s apprehension will be greatly appreciated and will not go unnoticed,” the post stated.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of communication and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community. By fostering an open dialogue and offering support, citizens can play a significant role in maintaining public safety. The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to working with the community and values the cooperation that has been demonstrated thus far. Together, through continued support and shared information, the safety and well-being of the community can and will be collectively safeguarded,” the post continued.

On Friday night, the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office took to social media again, advising law enforcement has expanded their search for Salway past Alliance and Scottsbluff, believing that he may have received aid from connections in Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming or New Mexico.

“Given this information, law enforcement agencies encourage anyone who may have information regarding Salway’s whereabouts or any potential sightings to come forward. Citizens are urged not to approach Salway if they see him, as it is believed that he could potentially be armed with a handgun. Instead, individuals should contact their local law enforcement agency immediately for assistance,” the post stated.

The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office also provided background into Salway’s case, noting that he has current pending criminal charges of first degree sexual assault, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and first degree false imprisonment.

“Harley Salway III had arrest warrants issued against him in February 2024 following his abscondment. He was apprehended later in December of the same year regarding the charges that were filed against him. While we understand there could be concerns in the community, law enforcement assures the public that there are currently limited safety concerns related to the ongoing investigation.

Authorities from the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the Alliance Police Department, along with many other agencies, are actively involved in the search and investigation. We urge the community to remain vigilant and to report any relevant information, no matter how minor it may seem. Community assistance is a vital part of law enforcement strategies in tracking down individuals who may pose a risk,” the post stated.

Anyone who has information about Salway is encouraged to contact either the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office at 308-762-6464 or the Alliance Police Department at 308-762-4955.
