Unless you are a Philadelphia Eagles fan or a Kansas City Chiefs hater, Super Bowl LIX was about has appealing as finding potato chips in the punch bowl
Congrats to the Eagles. They were clearly the better team.
And the final score of 40-22 was not a reflection of the game. The Eagles led 24-0 at halftime and 34-0 before KC even scored. By halftime, my beloved Chiefs, who were anemic on offense, didn’t stand a chance.
I’ve seen this movie before.
I’ve had my ticket punched to Nebraska football games that were even less entertaining.
Here are a few:
November 23, 1973: Oklahoma 27, Nebraska 0. The Sooners led 14-0 at halftime, but it was clear that NU wasn’t going to penetrate Oklahoma’s defense. Not only was Nebraska shutout, but Husker offense never crossed the 50-yard-line.
November 25, 1977: Oklahoma 38, Nebraska 7. On the sixth anniversary of the Games of the Century, OU led NU 21-7 at halftime. OU rushed for 417 yards and dominated the time of possession.
November 23, 1990: Oklahoma 45, Nebraska 10. The Sooners led by 25 points by the end of the third quarter. The OU killer TD was a 48-yard run by Mike McKinley with 42 seconds left in the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth quarter, OU returned an intercepted pass 43 yards for a touchdown.
January 1, 1991: Orange Bowl. Miami 22, Nebraska 0. Miami led 22-0 at the end of the third quarter. The Hurricanes defense toyed with Nebraska’s offense all night holding the Big Red to 171 yards.
October 9, 2004: Texas Teach 70, Nebraska 10. The Red Raiders had the game won by the end of the third quarter, leading 42-10. To make matters worse, they scored four more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Nebraska had seven turnovers.
November 1, 2006: Oklahoma 62, Nebraska 28. The Sooners led 49-14 at halftime. Enough said.
November 5, 2016: Ohio State 62, Nebraska 3. Ohio State led at halftime, 31-3. The Buckeyes ran 29 more plays than Nebraska.
October 14, 2017: Ohio State 56, Nebraska 14. The Buckeyes led at halftime, 35-0. This game was played on the 45th anniversary of the first Husker game I ever attended, a 62-0 blowout of Missouri in 1972. I attended the 2017 game for nostalgia. I remember 1972 very well. I’ve done my best to put 2017 out of my mind.
September 22, 2018: Michigan 56, Nebraska 10. The host Wolverines led at halftime, 39-0. Television sets and radios across Nebraska went click, click, click.
September 30, 2023: Michigan 45, Nebraska 7. The Wolverines led at halftime, 28-0. Since this game was played in Lincoln, there was probably less clicking.
The Husker have done a good job over the years preparing me for Super Bowl LIX disappointment.
But I choose to look on the bright side. My Chiefs have competed in seven straight AFC championship games and have competed in the Super Bowl five of the past six years.
I’m hoping the Chiefs have prepared me for future Cornhusker success!
