Lola M. (Johnson) Schadwinkel Obituary

Lola M. (Johnson) Schadwinkel, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2023 in the Memory Support Unit of Highland Park Care Center with her daughters by her side.

She was born September 14, 1929 to Chester R. and L. Pearl (Eivins) Johnson.  She graduated from Mullen High School in 1947 and attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Elementary Education.  She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority at the University.

Her teaching career began in Alliance Public Schools in 1952 as a kindergarten teacher.  During this time she met Emil A. “Ted” Schadwinkel and they were married November 21, 1954.  Shortly after they married, they moved to Mullen, Nebraska.  Their three children were born while living in Mullen.  In 1962 they relocated to Alliance, Nebraska and Lola worked as a substitute teacher for several years and eventually took a full-time job teaching.  Lola retired in 1993 but stayed active as a substitute teacher for both Alliance and Hemingford School Systems for several years.

Lola was a member of the United Methodist Church and an active member of their choir and ladies group.  She was a member of Eastern Star, Community Choir, volunteered for the American Red Cross to assist with swimming lessons, and P.E.O. Chapter AH.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her parents, her in-laws, Albert and Orletha Schadwinkel, her brothers, Chester, Bill, and Don, her sister Eleanor, and her sister-in-law, Kathy.

Lola is survived by her three children, Sally (Steve) Engelhaupt, Craig (Robin) Schadwinkel, and Sue (Trent) Benzel.  Additional survivors are her sister, Patricia Wallingford; brother-in-law, Charles (Mary) Schadwinkel; her grandchildren, Andrea Krueger, Erin Rosenthal, Tim Engelhaupt, Bryan Benzel, Shaylah Stephens, and Kayleigh Hickman; as well as 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 27, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.  at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with Pastor Gideon Achi officiating.  Burial will follow at the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Highland Park Care Center Memory Support Unit, the United Methodist Church, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lola’s family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Highland Park Memory Support for the loving, compassionate care given to Mom these past 10 years.  You are the best!
