Andy Serrel Carter, who was taken into custody in Weld County, Colo., was charged with child abuse resulting in death, a class 2 felony, following an incident on July 2.

According to an Affidavit provided by the Weld County District Attorney’s Office, Greeley Police Department detectives responded to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colo., after an infant child arrived at the facility with a brain bleed. While making their way to the hospital, the detectives learned that Carter had takedn the victim to a medical facility earlier that morning. Staff at the hospital immediately initiated CPR on the hallway floor and transported to the emergency room where life-saving measures were continued.

After multiple efforts, the child was pronounced dead at 2:27 p.m. According to the Affidavit detectives interviewed the mother of the child. The mother said it was the first time Carter had been left alone with the child.

According to the Affidavit, an autopsy showed old and new bruising to the child’s face and severe trauma to the brain. They determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma and ruled the death a homicide.
