Maria Hernandez Obituary

Maria Hernandez, 82, passed away March 31, 2022 at Box Butte General Hospital.

She was born in Cedral, San Luis Potosí, Mexico on January 17, 1940 to Miguel Rico and Maria Cardona. She was the oldest of seven.

Maria was united in marriage to Jose Jesus Hernandez in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being a mother and grandmother, but most of all a wife. She immigrated to the United States in 1996 and has resided in Alliance since. Her time in Alliance was spent doing the things she loved like shopping, never being one to miss a good garage sale! She enjoyed cooking and uniting the family around the dinner table for a big bowl of menudo. She was a lover of clothes, jewelry, shoes, and all things fashion. She loved a good telenovela and believed an ice cold Coke could solve most of life’s problems.

She is survived by her seven children, Irma Hernandez of Alliance, Jose Luis Hernandez of Sidney, NE, Reyna (Greg) Jenkins of Rapid City, SD, Esmeralda (Gary) Werner of Colorado Springs, CO, Roberto Hernandez of Alliance, Jose Jesus (Miriam) Hernandez of Alliance, and Jose Miguel Hernandez of Sidney, NE.

She is survived by 13 grandchildren, Gerardo Peña of Lincoln, NE, Omar (Rachel) Peña of Sacramento, CA, Iris (Jeremy) Bishop of Alliance, Greg (Laurie) Burger of Alliance, Stephanie(Danny) Reynaga of Mitchell, NE, David(Melody) Burger of St. Louis, Missouri, Magaly (Samuel) Gonzalez of Mexico, Jose Jesus (Miriam) Hernandez III of Mexico, Anahi(Fernando) Gonzalez of Alliance, Jose Hernandez of Sidney, NE, Luis Hernandez of Sidney, NE, Analicia Hernandez of Sidney, NE, and Alejandro Hernandez of Sidney, NE, and 12 great-grandchildren, Vincent Burger, Liam Peña, Mackenzie Peña, Noah Reynaga, Samuelito Gonzalez, Jonah Reynaga, Adelyn Burger, Ellie Bishop, Amelia Reynaga, Vivian Burger, Camila Peña, and Karol Gonzalez. She is also survived by her brother, Juan Rico of Mission, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 13th beginning at 4:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 6:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Burial will be in San Benito, N.L., Mexico.
