This is the time of year when severe weather is possible. One of the more famous severe weather outbreaks happened during this time nearly 45 years ago in central Nebraska. On June 3rd, back in 1980, seven tornadoes ripped through the city of Grand Island. Hundreds of homes and nearly the entire southern business district was destroyed. After it was all said and done, there were five fatalities and a few hundred with injuries. The tornadoes first started to impact Grand Island around 8:45 in the evening and as many as three tornadoes were on the ground at the same time. The last tornado of the night hit before midnight bringing the total number of tornadoes seen in Grand Island to seven. Many amazing stories have come from this unbelievable outbreak. One is the creation of Tornado Hill. The landfill that was in use at the time was nearly full before the tornadoes struck and with all the refuse from the damage, there was no more room. So, it was decided to burn all the debris and create a hill of ashes and dirt. The hill was, and still is, used for sledding in the winter.
