One Arrested Following Fatal Accident

A crash on Saturday afternoon resulted in the death of one person, leading another to be arrested on the charges of motor vehicle homicide.

Cody Thomas, Public Relations Director for the Nebraska State Patrol, said troopers responded to the report of a crash at the intersection of Highway 385 and Link 7E. The wreck, which involved a motorcycle and a car, occurred at 12:10 p.m.

Kirby Schimmels, 77, of Houston, Texas, who was riding the motorcycle, was transported to Box Butte General Hospital where, according to Thomas, he was pronounced deceased.

“Preliminary investigation shows that the motorcycle, ridden by Schimmels, was northbound on Highway 385 when a Nissan Sentra failed to yield at a stop sign on Link 7E,” said Thomas. “The motorcycle then collided with the Nissan, which was driven by Jayesh Desai, 55, of Mumbai, India.”

Desai was arrested by troopers for motor vehicle homicide, and he was lodged in the Box Butte County Jail.
