Point of Rock Chapter, NSDAR, met for a dessert meeting at 1pm at the home of Dorothy Carnine. There were six members present. The Opening Ritual and Pledge of Allegiance were read by Regent Audrey Howler.

The President General’s message was read and the 130th Continental Congress will be held to a virtual format as the District of Columbia remains is Phase 2 of its reopening.

Indian Minutes: Contemporary Native Americans face challenges today. If you watch the news, you’ll see headlines about mascots, celebrities wearing headdresses, and pipelines. While these are important issues, there are other problems facing Native communities that are more significant. These are experienced socially, economically, culturally and on many other fronts. Impoverishment and unemployment, Violence against women and children, Native Americas are less educated, Poor quality housing, Inadequate health care, Native language is becoming extinct, and limited financial institutions in the Native communities.

National Defense Report: National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors the men and women who served in the military during one of the longest conflicts in US history. Crossing nearly two decades and involving 5 US presidents and 500,000 US military personnel , the war left its mark on the American psyche.

More than 58,000 military members were killed during the war, and returning veterans did not always receive respective welcomes upon their arrival back in country. The observance recognizes the military service of these men and women who answered the call to serve their country when they were needed.

The Department of Veterans Affairs designates those who served in Vietnam between Feb 28,1961 and May 7, 1975 as Vietnam veterans and those who served between Aug 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975, inclusive, anywhere in the world as Vietnam-era veterans.

Secretary’s report was approved as read.

Old business: Annual Board of Management on Zoom in March was interesting for those attending.

Unfinished Business: The Eda Hempel/ DAR scholarship deadline has passed and the applications are in and being judged.

Program: The ladies had a tour of the greenhouse and saw succulents in bloom.

Regent Audrey thanked Dorothy for being hostess. The next meeting will be with Joni Merrigan.
