We often do not take time to consider how easy it is to turn on the tap and have clean, safe water come out, or to flush the commode and not have to worry about the waste, but keeping these systems working for our daily comfort and ease is no easy task. The City of Alliance Water and Sewer Department is directed by Public Works Director Ross Grant and is supervised by Foreman Bob Swedeen with the help of five maintenance workers. This department is focused on providing clean and safe drinking water for the residents of Alliance and the effective removal and treatment of waste-no easy task given how extensive and diverse these systems are.
Maintenance duties include pipes, pumps, motors, Remote Terminal Units (RTU’s), storage tanks, pivots, fire hydrants, valves, water meters, Accelerated Processing Units (APU’s), generator sets, and managing the cross connection program. Inspection of water, sewer, and drainage systems are completed at regular intervals to proactively ensure a properly functioning system, reducing failures, backups and overflows. Employees inspect contractor work to verify compliance with construction standards. As if that weren’t enough, they also maintain 1,000 acres of City-owned property.
Clean water is ensured by regularly taking water samples for compliance with standards and state safety regulations. Averaging 800,000 to 1,000,000 gallons of flow per day, the Alliance sewer system requires daily maintenance for an efficiently operating sewer system – essential for sanitation and disease prevention. Responding to emergencies throughout the year and at all hours of the day, these employees are putting in the hard days to make your life easier.
