Reflections for the Week of April 14

Airport:

• Submitted an appropriations request application to Senator Fischer’s for FY2026.

• Nebraska Department of Transportation – Aeronautics Division staff were at the airport to inspect all pavements surfaces. This is usually done every three years.

• Gathering required documents and submitting to FAA for the documents portion of the inspection.

• Maintenance staff performed a special inspection of all airfield signs.

• Staff read all water meters for utility billing purposes.

• Filling of prairie dog holes on all airport property is a priority of staff.

Accounting and Finance:

• Attended Council meeting

• Paid approved Council claims

• Completed payroll

• Attended Webinar on Paid Leave

• Attended quarterly IT meeting

Utilities Billing Services:

• Cycle 2 bills mailed, Cycle 4 reminder notices mailed

• Six new residential accounts, One new GS/Farm account, One new Commercial account Water/Sewer:

• 100 water radios installed this week

• 19 work orders, 48 locates completed

• Collected well samples, chlorine residuals

• Moved metal hydrants to scrap pile

• Brought in surplus metal pipe from airport for upcoming training

• Read cycle 3 radios

• Collected amps and volts readings on in-town wells

• Ongoing troubleshooting for pit radios

• Chlorinated Carhenge well for upcoming season

• Began di-winterizing process for sewer lake pivots

• Moved office equipment

Streets:

• Completed 48 locates

• Poured concrete in alley after fixing storm sewer

• Poured concrete lid for storm drain

• Graded several alleys

• Assisted with CDL training

• Measured two sidewalks for cost-share program

• Poured concrete on portion of street repair from Grandview main break Landfill:

• Moved dirt cover

• 234 customers, 345 tons of refuse this week

• Ran burn box

• Expanded loose fill access road

• Bailer repairs and equipment maintenance

Police:

• Attended APS Leadership Meeting

• Attended Board Meeting for Heritage Days

• SRO Sherlock made several appearances as the Easter Bunny this week.

• Attended City Council Meeting

• Celebrated National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week to honor our dispatchers with pizza and some amazing desserts compliments of Tracy Felker.

• Attended IT Meeting with Bytes

• Attended an informational meeting about a proposed substance abuse/mental health treatment facility in Morrill County.

• Held the quarterly APD Community Forum at the Museum and had a great discussion about the planning phases of the proposed Public Safety Center.

• Preparing budget items as we put together our capital budget requests for FY26.

Electric:

• Continue installation of load control/disconnect boxes

• Continued progress on the three-phase rebuild project north of Nance Road and east of Highway 87

• Installed new transformers and related hardware on three irrigation well transformer banks on Wayne Road

• Attended Council meeting

• Assisted Parks Department with irrigation control electrical work

• Moved front desk and related equipment back into entry way after new flooring installation

• A farming accident Wednesday evening resulted in two poles, transformer bank and related irrigation control cabinets being destroyed on CR 55, also creating an outage for 9 residences until a new pole could be installed to secure power line

• All department personnel attended NECC monthly safety meeting

• Repaired/replaced several street/security lights

• Performed infrared/thermal inspections on all substations and several large load transformers and related equipment

• Welcome to Nikole Cross as the new Secretary for the Electric and Public Works departments.

Personnel:

• Onboarding improvements are in progress. We’re streamlining the onboarding experience for both regular and seasonal hires. Updates include redesigned onboarding packets for improved clarity and compliance. We’re also developing updated training and workflows related to Benefits, Timekeeping, and the New Employee Safety Checklist.

• HR is actively coordinating interviews and pre-employment steps for open roles in Transit, Streets, Utilities, and the Senior Center. Several new hires are progressing through the final stages of the process.

• We’re preparing for Supervisor Training next week—materials are being finalized, and logistics are coming together. All first-line supervisors are attending!

• We are assisting employees with leave requests related to qualifying family and medical events. HR sent out a helpful fact sheet for employees who are expecting.

• We featured Pat and Kelly McCauley in this week’s Friday Feature.

• After 10 years, the HR office is getting a much-needed makeover! Stop by and see the fresh paint, new layout, and revitalized workspace.

Fire:

• Chief meet with our EOne representative on our new fire engine build.

• Ambulance graphics package finalized with Rocky Mountain Emergency Vehicles. We anticipate delivery in August 2025.

• Monthly line officers meeting held.

• EMS drill conducted Wednesday evening and covered Summer Emergencies.

• Career staff meeting held Thursday morning.

Library:

• This week summer reading preparation was in full swing with hundreds of bags being prepared for registration for the program which begins May 19. We continue with spring cleaning and have been busy making sure the library is well organized by shelf reading the collection.

• Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn held Story Time A to Z featuring Spring Sparkle, creating colorful baskets with Granny B and an Easter Egg Hunt!  LEGO Club worked on their creations.  The search for Little Blue Peep continues through April 19.  Cynthia organized the Book Mobile, cataloged new items, maintained backpacks, and made preparations for upcoming events, including Summer Reading.

• Technical Services Librarian Emily Nelson finished the Non-fiction shelf reading project, made the weekly bookmobile deliveries, and processed Interlibrary loans for patrons, private book clubs, and the library book clubs. She also assisted patrons with computer questions and updated the social media sites and the library website.

• Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart hosted the book club at Highland Park Care Center and the True Crime Book club. She also aided during the Story Time Easter Egg Hunt and continued working on the Fiction and Non-Fiction shelf reading project.

• Library Clerks Pam Becker and Stephanie Hamilton have been working hard at summer reading preparation and shelf reading.

Parks:

• Worked on the hustler mower.

• Fertilized the cemetery, ballfields, and small parks.

• Turned irrigation on to the ballfields and tennis courts.

• Repaired the pickleball net at the 9th St. tennis courts.

• Got power to the irrigation timer at BN Ballfield.

• Irrigation install is in its final stages at BN Ballfield.

• Picked up our Toro work cart in Denver.

• Overseeded some areas in the parks that required it.

• Repaired the backflow at Bandshell.

RSVP:

• We had 20 volunteers in the community.

• Patrons enjoyed cards, bingo, coffee and treats.

Museum:

• Hosted the Sandhillers monthly meeting

• Hosted the Alliance Police Department Quarterly Forum

• Started plans for the Museum’s 60th Birthday Celebration

• Processed 5 requests from the public for local information.

Transit:

• 834 Passengers

Administration:

• City Council Meeting which included the second reading for the annexation of Jirdon Agri-Chemicals, Inc. property and a presentation by Eric Case of Sandhills Electric on progress on the solar field project.
