Reflections for the Week of Aug. 15-19

BBDC:

* Seeking business to sign up for the Drive Thru Job Fair to be held Aug. 31 from 4:30-6 p.m. outside BBDC offices located at 502 Box Butte.

* Attended Activate Alliance meeting. Attended Community Huddle.

* Attended City Council Tuesday night – spoke in favor of Alliance Heartland Flat

Mall/Apartments project.

* Toured the downtown with Vacanti Municipal Consulting Service to discuss needs and grant opportunities.

Public Works:

* Dirt moving and additional cover underway at landfill.

* Crosswalks and no parking areas painted in preparation for the beginning of the school year.

* Concrete repair at 5th and Missouri.

* Alley grade work pot hole repair, and ROW mowing underway.

* Water Dept. Assisted with construction of a sand bunker at Skyview Golf Course.

* 16385 feet of sanitary sewer jetted this week.

* 245 tons of refuse collected this week.

* 549 Transit riders this week.

Police Admin:

* Meetings: Geolitica, Central Square, High School, Nebraska PATH, WING, Rekor.

Police Communications/Intelligence:

* Coordinated 558 calls for service.

* Completed 2 report requests.

* 1 firearms permit issued.

Police Operations:

* 9 Child Welfare Investigations.

* 0 DUI, 13 Traffic Stops.

* 2 accidents, 1 of which were in parking lots.

* 0 K9 deployments.

* 141 Building Checks.

* 26 Community Contacts/Business Checks.

* 0 Vacation House Checks.

* 16 Active Investigations.

Animal Control:

* 28 Animal Calls.

* 1 Dog Impounds. 3 dogs currently in the shelter.

* 1 Cat Impounds. 3 cats currently in the shelter.

Code Enforcement:

* 11 Code enforcement issues.

Notable Service:

* 2 Neighborhood meetings scheduled for August 20th.

HR:

* HR has completed orientation for 3 new employees in August: Cindy Baker, City Treasurer; Ivyl Flood, Street Maintenance Worker; Tara Stanec, Utility Services Office Manager. Welcome to the City!

*Administering tests for Fire and Police candidates and preparing for upcoming Civil Service Commission interviews.

* Lead monthly Western Nebraska Human Resource Association Meeting.

* Assisting employees and supervisors with requests.

Electric:

* Continue to repair and replace streetlights.

* Replacing numerous deficient poles on our system.

* Performed repair and maintenance on several irrigation well transformer banks.

* Attended the MEAN Board of Directors meeting in Kearney.

Airport:

* Concrete replacement work around the hangars has been completed.

* We have an opening for Airport Maintenance Worker position, with hopes of hiring before winter weather sets in.

Fire:

* UL Fire Equipment services completed annual tests for the ground ladder and pumps.

* FireCatt started annual fire hose testing.

Museum:

* We are hosting the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC) 2022 traveling Art show in our theater until September 7. This consists of 25 award winning pieces from across Nebraska.

* Also on display until September 7th, drop in to view Jason Wentworth’s PEZ dispenser display.

* We are continuing our free reading give-away in the upstairs gallery. The offering includes 100’s of local newspapers spanning nine decades, many Alliance Times-Herald photos from the 1990’s, Worley photos, early magazines, unused albums, manila envelopes suitable for storage and much, much more. These items are duplicates and excess and are crowding our storage. Please stop by and help us out. If you love history, you will love our selection! We are adding items daily. The Museum Scrapbook club also is cleaning out and has some items to give away. This will continue through September.

* The Museum Partners met for their quarterly meeting. If you are interested in joining this Museum support group, please contact Becky Herian.

Library:

* Staff is putting together new non-fiction book club kits to add to our growing book club kit selection.

* Cataloguing a variety of new books for our collection.

* Staff is cross-training after some changes to staffing.

* Updating the website to ensure its accuracy.

* Fall programming is being planned and the accompanying displays are under development.

Golf Course:

* Repaired several pieces of equipment and ordered parts for several others.

* Council approved the purchase of a replacement greens mower. Deliver is expected in early 2023.

* Mowed and performed regular maintenance on the course. Greens are recovering well after aeration.

* Started construction of the new practice bunker.

* Play continues to be steady.

Parks:

* Cleaned the root balls and stumps out of the creek at the tennis courts.

* Cleaned out the south end of the drainage ditch in Central Park.

* Met with the tree trimmer to determine additional areas that need cleared of dead branches.

* Cleaned out in front of the culverts on the practice field.

* Collected grass clippings on all the ballfields and larger parks as cooler days resulted in accelerated growth rates for the turf.

* Mowed along the pedestrian trail from Flack to Meadowlark.

* Started winterizing and draining the pool. Put all the umbrella canvases into storage for the season.

Finance:

* June sales taxes will be received next week in the amount of $204,780.50. This is up 4.3% from the prior month and 6.1% from June 2021.

* Assessed valuation was received from the County and is up 5.88% to $570,557,244. The proposed tax City request is up 1.99% resulting in a 2022 city levy of .331258 as compared to the 2021 levy of .343879.
