Reflections for the Week of Aug. 30-Sept. 3

Community Development:

• Goodwill has been approved for a building permit for their build out. This will be in the Alliance Plaza west of Family Dollar/Dollar Tree.

• Services for 15 mobile homes in Meadows are currently being plumbed.

• No Planning Commission meeting in September.

• No Board of Adjustment meeting held in August.

• 548 roofing permits have been issued since the 7/9 hail storm.

Police:

• Anyone interested in a part-time police officer position can contact the Human Resources Department.

• Held a “Best Practices” meeting with the FBI regarding terrorism, airport security and explosives.

• No burglaries last week.

• We had 5 minor property damage crashes last week, drivers are urged to be mindful when driving, especially with school back in session. Please report intersections with impeded sight-lines to either the Streets Department or Code Enforcement.

• Two officers attended instructor training in Colorado for ICAT on new ways to handle “use of force”. The whole department will be trained in the next few weeks and it will be offered to outside agencies.

Museum:

• Sallows Museum is starting winter hours (11:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday-Saturday). Museum will be open on Labor Day.

• The Knight Museum will be closed Sunday and Monday for carpet cleaning, painting and maintenance.

• Staff is in the process of upgrading historic topical files for easier use by patrons.

• Cataloging several large new collections and upgrading our photo collection on the new monitors throughout the gallery.

Parks:

• Preparations for Fall with application of herbicide, tree trimming and mowing.

• Installed irrigation timers in several areas that required staff to run them by hand.

• Completed irrigation repairs at Central, Laing, and Sudman parks, and Museum.

Golf:

• Staff cleaned up tree and other debris from the course after the storm on Wednesday night. Not significant damage as the hail was small. Course got just over 2” of rain very quickly from that storm.

• Revenue continues to be up and is once again significantly over revenues from August 2020. Play continues to be steady.

Library:

• Renovation of the bookstore continues.

• To make room for the new items, we are giving away books and DVDs in the East entrance of the building.

• The Library is looking at expanding its outreach programming through a bookmobile service. The logistics are still being worked out. We are targeting to have this program up and running before October 1st. More information to follow.

• Fall educational programs have been set, and there are a lot of options for all ages!

• There will be a joint program held September 14th with KAB for recycled craft for kids.

• We currently have a “School Days” reading contest going for grades K-12 in which they are eligible to win a stencil set and Starbucks gift cards! This ends September 30th.

RSVP & Nutrition Site:

• The program continues to accept applications for the cook positon.

• Attendance continues to be good, both during meals and after for Senior Center activities.

BBDC:

• Attended Nebraska Economic Developers Association (NEDA) annual conference in Sidney last week. The conference had great breakouts, and Chelsie Herian was elected as NEDA Board Secretary.

• Chelsie Herian Celebrated 11 years as BBDC Executive Director on August 26th.

• Attended FLIP IT! Workshop in McCook this Tuesday –great information and new ideas, hope to share soon.

• Working on Hemingford Leadership Certified Community recertification.

• Met with a couple of Entrepreneurs this week.

Electric:

• We have had a contractor working in the Broadwater substation this week, replacing some seals and performing maintenance on the transformer.

• We had two personnel attend the hotline-rubber gloving school in Sidney for three days this week.

• Our contractor finished rebuilding the three phase line on CR 63 this week.

• We continue to perform maintenance on both the rural and urban electric system.

Public Works:

• Fire cleanup at landfill is ongoing.

• End of month reporting sent to DENR (Aug was highest water use month in several years with 105,490,000 gallons of water produced).

• Big Horn paving project complete.

• PW building in process of installing overhead doors.

• 3rd St. overlay project in process of small concrete repairs. Spring overlay projects in process of small concrete repairs.

• Lift Station A in process of backfilling wet well excavation.
