Reflections for the Week of Dec. 4-8

Fire:

∙ Staff has continued to work on our upstairs restroom remodel project. Demolition complete, reconstruction has begun.

∙ Continue to prepare for the upstairs flooring project.

∙ Chief participated in a webinar “Funding Your Public Safety Projects for Small and Rural Jurisdictions.”

∙ Staff participated in the all Employee Huddle at the museum.

∙ Met with the E-One Fire Truck representative and approved the paint sample for the new fire truck.

∙ Weekly Department training: ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting).

BBDC:

∙ Participated in a NEDA Executive Board meeting with DED Staff Tuesday morning. ∙ Participated in a Mental Health TA Call via Zoom provided by ESU13 (discussion around need for more providers).

∙ BBDC held its monthly board meeting Wednesday for the purpose of “Reorganization” – new officers announced in next weeks’ E-Newsletter.

∙ Will participate in Quarterly Stakeholder Zoom for Career Connections of Western Nebraska. Electric:

∙ We started a three- phase line extension project at Schiff Feedlot.

∙ Started replacing “reject” poles and upgrading a large section of single- phase line south of Valley Road.

∙ Performed the monthly MEAN required run of Cody generation plant.

∙ Installed and energized a new single phase underground service on CR 63 north of Madison. ∙ Installed and energized a new single phase overhead service on CR 57 south of Lincoln. ∙ Attended monthly NECC safety meeting for CPR/First Aid certification.

∙ All department staff attended the “Huddle” meeting.

∙ On Thursday, the strong winds blew a group of three trees over into the three phase line on CR 60 north of Lincoln Road, resulting in one broken pole and downed lines, causing an outage for 6 houses for a large part of afternoon, removing the trees safely and without causing more damage to lines proved difficult and time consuming.

∙ Assisted Great Plains Power as they performed wrap-up work on east rebuild project. Chamber:

∙ We are launching a new generation of Chamber Bucks for 2024, unlike a gift card, these can only be used at participating chamber businesses, which is vital in keeping the funds into the local businesses. We depend on Mom & Pop shops to keep our community thriving and resilient, be vocal, buy local! This is the time of year where many small businesses make or break their year financially, so wherever you can shop locally!

∙ We are having some nice weather and this weekend should be full of sports! ∙ Santa’s House from 2-4pm tomorrow!

Water/Sewer:

∙ A station PLC failure caused employees to operate station by hand all weekend. ∙ Pulled pumps 2,3, and 4 for cleaning at A station.

∙ Completed 22 locates.

∙ Completed 12 utility office work orders.

∙ Completed weekly water samples and chlorine residuals.

∙ Fixed water main break at Grandview school.

∙ Setup new bypass pump at A station for backup.

∙ Attended employee Huddle.

∙ Ordered new PLC for A station.

∙ Cleaned floats in wet well at A station.

∙ Replaced battery backup at sewer lake pump station.

Streets:

∙ Cleaned shop.

∙ Assisted water department with main break.

∙ Patched potholes graded alleys.

∙ Graded Sweetwater Ave.

∙ Ongoing CDL training.

∙ Conducted road grader training.

Public Transit:

∙ 814 riders this week

Landfill:

∙ 149 customers this week.

∙ 201 tons of refuse this week.

∙ Moved bales and laid cover.

∙ Cleaned basement.

∙ Acquired SWANA membership.

Airport:

∙ Passenger count for November was 374 enplaned and 341 deplaned.

∙ Participated in phone conference call with FAA and airport engineers to discuss safety plan for Seal Coat of Runway 12/30 and Runway 8/26.

∙ Participated in Safety Committee Meeting for City.

∙ Hunter Meggison started with the airport on Tuesday and we are happy to have him on board. ∙ Staff laid a small section of tile in the FBO office space that houses the National Weather Service equipment. This will allow the epoxy flooring to be poured next week while maintaining weather information for pilots during that process. Thank you for the Fire Department for hauling the tile for us!

∙ Staff participated in monthly ARFF training on Wednesday evening.

∙ Replaced small heater in Building #3209.

∙ FBO sewer issues resolved.

Accounting and Finance:

∙ Electronic records storage set up complete.

∙ Claims from Council meeting paid.

∙ Payroll tasks completed.

∙ Audit preparation continued.

∙ All-staff meeting attended.

∙ IT project reviewed.

Utility Office:

∙ Cycle one bills sent.

∙ Cycle three bills due.

∙ 18 utility start services (Residential) Since Dec. 1.

Museum:

∙ We wrapped up the 27th Annual Christmas Festival with 151 items sold and a grand total of $9,000 raised.

∙ The Cookie decorating class that we hosted during the festival was a big hit and we will be sponsoring another one for Valentine’s Day so be watching.

∙ Our final day of the Festival, St. John’s Brass played a rousing mini Concert that was a fantastic way to finish the week.

∙ Our gift shop is full of interesting Christmas décor, gifts and stocking stuffers. Come check out all of the new items.

∙ We hosted the Teacher’s Sorority Holiday Brunch.

∙ The Theater was rented for a baby shower.

∙ The Sandhiller’s group met in the conference room. This group meets monthly to study, research and visit about early ranching and other Sandhill’s related topics.

∙ The NAC Art Show that we have been hosting is moving to Mullen on Sunday. ∙ We hosted the City of Alliance Huddle for all city employees.

RSVP & Senior Center:

∙ Continued providing dine in and delivery meals.

∙ RSVP had over 15 volunteers assisting in diverse community activities this week. ∙ In the month of November over 1,200 meals were served to seniors in the community. ∙ Hosted a pizza party for area seniors where we had a great turn out.

Library:

∙ The holidays are a particularly busy time in the library, with patrons wanting to checkout everything form holiday romance and mysteries to one of our new holiday baking books! The patrons seem to enjoy the library decorations that the staff works so hard on. They often comment on the library’s environment and enjoy purchasing gifts from the bookstore or buying a paw print ornament to help out the Alliance Animal Shelter with medical bills.

∙ Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn held story time with festive fun decorating the Children’s Room, created prizes for a search for Merry Chris Moose, and hosted LEGO Club. She also organized backpacks and the Book Mobile for Thursday deliveries, and created press releases and updates for the library website and Facebook page.

∙ Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart finalized adult programming for January, hosted the APL Book Club Holiday Potluck and discussion, and cataloged new materials. She also hosted the book club at Highland Park Care Center and continued aiding in the training process with the new library clerk, Stephanie.

∙ Library Clerk Pam Becker has been busy processing new materials and helping with bookstore sales! She also has been busy with all the new a card applications the library continues to see. ∙ New Library Clerk Stephanie Hamilton is working on her training with the librarian staff. It has been a busy time in the library, so she has had many different learning opportunities to see just how unique each patron interaction can be! We have enjoyed having her here!

Parks:

∙ Conducted interviews for Maintenance Worker I opening.

∙ Assist with the installation of kitchen cabinets and painting at the Senior Center. ∙ Mowed Carhenge to remove old growth from last summer.

∙ Mowed and picked up grass clippings at Bower Field in preparation for topdressing. ∙ Repaired the snow plow on the pickup.

∙ Repaired the snow blower attachment for the front end mower.

∙ Working on repairs of several other pieces of snow equipment to facilitate better operation in Spring.

∙ Picked up leaf piles at Sallows parking lot and the old swimming pool parking lot. ∙ Replaced two pieces of playground equipment at Central Park.

Golf:

∙ Continued equipment maintenance.

∙ Hand watered Greens as necessary when temperatures warm up.

∙ Holidays sales continue in the pro shop.

∙ Started selling memberships for the 2024 Golf season.

HR:

∙ Human Resources has begun processing Open Enrollment changes for all benefit eligible employees. We will spend the next two weeks following-up with employees if additional information is needed for benefits like FSAs, HSAs, and Voluntary Life Benefits. HR will be working with our vendors including RCI and Paylocity to ensure the EDI files are updated correctly with accurate information for enrollment and billing.

∙ Submitting required compliance reports for Department of Labor, FMCSA and FTA programs. ∙ Assisting departments and employees with requests.

∙ Conducting interviews for available positions.

∙ Onboarding new employees.

Administration:

∙ Continued preparations for upcoming Police Chief Interviews; reviewed recommendations from GPS consultants; itinerary coordination.

∙ Personnel issues

∙ Kickoff meeting for CivicReady/Mass Communication software. This can be used for both internal and public communication in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

∙ Citywide employee meeting hosted by City Council and organized by the Employee Activity Committee. Thank you to all who made it happen and who attended!
