Reflections for the Week of July 15-19

Streets:

∙ Set up barricades for heritage days, band, and parade

∙ Weed eating around town, cleaned weeds off curbs for painting

∙ Put new reflective tape on dead end barricade

Police:

∙ Met with Finance about both current and upcoming budgets

∙ Met with Crime Commission in Chadron about requests for the next fiscal year

∙ Increased presence for Heritage Days Festival

∙ Attended WING meeting

∙ Annual radar certification for all patrol vehicles

∙ Placed the mobile camera trailer at Heritage Days

Electric:

∙ Performed load control on irrigation wells

∙ Repaired/replaced lightning damaged equipment on several irrigation well transformer banks

∙ Upgraded poles, wire and primary metering at Thompson Potato in Berea –installed pipe and basement for future padmount transformer installation

∙ Unlocked electric pedestals along Box Butte Avenue for Heritage Days vendors

∙ Energized temporary power rack for Carnival workers trailers

∙ Inspected carnival ride area, had one ride moved to allow proper clearance of power lines

∙ Assisted Black Hills energy while they dug near primary underground wires on Burnham Drive alley

∙ Operated generator #3 after voltage regulator replacement

Water/Sewer:

∙ Worked with Core & Main on water meter radios

∙ Water tap completed at 205 Yellowstone Ave

∙ Repaired fence that was previously hit

∙ Worked on water meter radio at Sewer Lake

∙ Mowed at the wellfield

∙ Mowed “A” Station, West 3rd & Elkhorn Water Towers

∙ Changed air filters on VFD’s

∙ Completed 15 Utility Office work orders and 6 utility locates

∙ Read cycle 3 water meters

∙ Sprayed weeds around wells and lift stations

∙ Sent 2 guys to Chadron for a continuing education class for their water license

∙ Jetted 20,000 feet of sewer line

∙ Installed 39 automatic reading radios

Fire:

∙ Chief participated in the State’s SAFER Grant meeting

∙ Driver/Operator Class, session 4 held all-day Saturday; session 5 was held on Monday evening with the State Fire Marshal Training Division

∙ Monthly EMS training conducted on Wednesday evening

∙ Weekly career staff meeting held Thursday morning

Landfill:

∙ Laid cover

∙ Made and hauled bales

∙ Serviced Equipment

∙ Ran the burn box

∙ Safety Briefing

Museum:

∙ Staff continued working on the extensive archival project. The first phase is close to finishing and once those items are moved to storage staff will start working on the clothing collection

∙ Staff assisted with research for several families visiting the community ∙ Visitor traffic continues to be constant. The passport program has been bringing in lots of visitors.

∙ Staff is working on renovating a donated NE Cattleman’s Bull utilized in parades and represented Nebraska in the rose bowl. The cow is made of solid oak.

Library:

∙ Preparations continue for the move of the juvenile and DVD sections. We are excited to get back into the upcoming school year with a new sitting area for our patrons in the front of the library. We are going for more of a “cozy living room” feel with hopes of our patrons feeling right at home. I would like to remind our patrons that this is a reorganization of materials and not a reduction. We hope to have this project completed by the middle of August or early Fall.

∙ Technical Services Librarian Emily Nelson updated the website with the weekly Bookworm feature, made Bookmobile deliveries, and processed Inter-library loans for our book clubs and several private book clubs. She also assisted patrons with computer questions and updated our social media sites.

∙ Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart cataloged new materials, created new DVD displays, and a new nonfiction display. She also continued work on the DVD reorganization project and hosted both the True Crime Book Club and the Highland Park Care Center Book Club.

∙ Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn hosted LEGO Club, did KCOW announcements, worked on Story Time themes and crafts for the upcoming year, organized the book mobile, updated window displays, did inventory and backpack maintenance, and cataloged new items.

∙ Library Clerks Pam Becker and Stephanie Hamilton have been assisting in various projects including the upcoming move of materials, adult summer reading supplies, and the processing of the new summer reads that continue to arrive daily.

RSVP & Senior Center:

∙ Continued to provide dine-in and delivery meals for local seniors.

∙ Assisted with hosting a blood drive exceeding our goal by four units!

∙ Hosted Bingo, card party, Bunco and Friday coffee and treats.

Parks:

∙ Mowed the disc golf course in preparation for the tournament Friday. Mowed the right of way along 10th Street east of Flack Avenue. All regular mowing and trimming done.

∙ Set up picnic tables, bleachers and rollout trashcans downtown for Heritage days. Cleaned picnic tables and emptied trash downtown every morning.

∙ Raked up weeds and pinecones at 3rd and Box Butte Mini Park.

∙ Continued cutting dead trees and brush out of the creek at stadium trail and trimmed suckers.

∙ Pulled the pumps out of the fountain pit and sent them in for repair.

∙ Prepared for two funerals to be held on Saturday.

∙ Irrigation repairs at Central Park, 9th St. tennis courts and Laing Lake.

∙ Sprayed for weeds at the softball complex.

Human Resources:

∙ Administered front and second-line supervisor written exams for police sergeant and lieutenant candidates

∙ Processing employee payroll changes and employment updates

∙ Assisting eligible employees to enroll and manage their retirement accounts

∙ Finalizing pre-employment conditions for a new Police Department hire

∙ Helping employees and supervisors with requests

∙ Conducting interviews and references for open positions

Administration:

∙ FY25 Budget preparation work continues

∙ Met with BBDC and Chamber representatives

∙ Attended Council Meeting with follow-up senior staff meeting the next day

∙ Completed a preliminary project analysis, timeline and budget for the proposed public safety center
