Reflections for the Week of June 10-14

Police:

∙ Attended the Employee Huddle.

∙ Attended training and orientation on new camera trailer.

∙ Presented Capital Budget Requests to the Planning Commission.

∙ Traveled to Colorado to pick up new police vehicles.

∙ Held police officer interviews at City Hall.

∙ Looked at potential sites for a Consolidated Public Safety Building.

Fire:

∙ Staff participated in the city-wide employee huddle.

∙ Chief participated in a Zoom meeting with University of Nebraska Medical Center on a Firefighter Research Project that they are looking to start.

∙ Chief presented the FY 2025 Capital Budget Projects to the Planning Commission.

∙ Chief conducted the quarterly fuel inspection at the airport and reviewed A701’s annual inspection prior to the FAA Part 139 Inspection.

∙ Work continues with the upstairs restroom remodel project.

∙ Monthly department-wide meeting held.

Water Sewer:

∙ Assisted plumber with Harris Sales sewer line.

∙ Repaired sewer drop for Lutheran School.

∙ Located and exposed manhole for Wells Fargo plumber.

∙ Installed 35 radio readers.

∙ Completed 17 locates.

∙ Completed 16 utility office locates.

∙ Jetted 15050 feet of sewer line.

∙ Shut off water at Meadows Park for plumber.

∙ Turned water on in new apartment building for fire inspection.

∙ Fixed electrical problems at sewer lake pump house.

Streets:

∙ Ongoing alley repair.

∙ Paint removal on centerline before repainting. Continue traffic marking painting.

∙ Completed 17 locates.

∙ Replaced wheel bearing on trailer.

∙ Attended employee huddle.

∙ Ongoing weed trimming.

∙ Worked on Kubota mower.

∙ Cleaned street sweeper.

∙ Delivered barricades for Berean Church event. Delivered barricades for pride event.

∙ Grader training.

Landfill:

∙ 267 tons of refuse this week.

∙ 229 customers this week.

∙ Laid cover on side slopes of MSW.

∙ Ongoing baler repairs.

∙ Operated burn box.

∙ Conducted state inspection.

∙ Conducted bobcat repairs.

Transit:

∙ 646 riders this week.

Knight Museum:

∙ We hosted the BNSF for two days of testing.

∙ We represented the Knight Museum at the Grand Opening of the Japanese Hall at the Legacy of the Plains Museum in Scottsbluff. There were over 500 people in attendance including an Emissary from the Emperor of Japan.

∙ We have started a large summer project to bring our inventory up to date. It is a huge project but with many fun surprises. It’s like Christmas every day!

∙ We have fantastic air conditioning! If you are looking to beat the heat this summer, we are looking for a few volunteers to help with moving our obituary collection into new binders and placing collections from class reunions into binders to make them easier to read. It is easy work with truly interesting reading and we could use a couple of people to help. If you have some extra time, please give us a call.

∙ We are also getting a new roof due to extensive hail damage. This explains the sound of a herd of elephants on the roof.

Library:

∙ Summer reading marches on with hundreds of kids still in the running for our grand prizes that will be given away at the end of week five! Just a reminder that reading logs are due every Friday by noon. We encourage patrons to get their logs in early in the week to avoid the crowds and have time to pick out some great reads for next week’s log!

∙ Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn held a” Story Time Adventures” session with guest readers, Mileigh Krebs and Sydnie Jeffrey that included special music with Mileigh and Dr. Christina Kloch. She also hosted “Artistic Adventures” with Carlie Foster and Keep Alliance Beautiful featured jungle and ocean painting and Robot Adventures with 4-H and Melissa Mracek which was a hands-on learning experience exploring the wonders of technology. Cynthia also did preparations for upcoming events, created the “Adventure Begins At Your Library” Wiggleworm feature on the website, made KCOW announcements, did minutes for Library Board meeting, organized backpacks, and did Book Mobile deliveries.

∙ Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart cataloged new materials, updated the website and social media pages, and processed ILL’s. She also hosted the book club at Highland Park Care Center and prepared for upcoming programs.

∙ Library Clerks Pam Becker and Stephanie Hamilton have been amazing at the desk this week handling all the patrons and kids coming in to stamp reading logs and check out more materials. Parks:

∙ Moved picnic tables and roll outs to Laing Lake and Central Park for events this weekend.

∙ Repaired irrigation at Laing Lake, Central Park and others as necessary.

∙ Completed regular mowing.

∙ Regular trash pickup in the parks.

∙ Picked up grass piles at the old swimming pool parking lot and the softball complex.

∙ Mowed south Potash and south Hudson lots.

∙ Trimmed grass around the headstones at the cemetery.

HR:

∙ Completed setups for final Seasonal hires. Total seasonal hires for 2024 is 66 new employees in Parks, Pool, Golf, and Public Works.

∙ Conducted Police Officer Interviews with candidates who met the minimum qualifications for Police Officers with the Police Review Board and Civil Service Commission.

∙ Maintaining required record-keeping for FMCSA and FTA random pool testing and results.

∙ Assisting employees with requests.

∙ Completing pre-employment conditions for individuals scheduled to begin employment and references for the same.

∙ Communicating with current applicants for Sergeant and Lieutenant positions regarding testing and interviews.

Administration:

∙ Work on the FY25 budget continues. Multiple department heads presented their capital improvement requests to the Planning & Zoning board on Tuesday. Work on consolidating requests and data clean-up as part of the process.

∙ Continue to work on location and potential funding for a joint public safety center.

∙ Attended the quarterly employee huddle.
