Reflections for the Week of June 27-July 1

Fire:

• Fought major commercial structure fire for a total of 22 hours at the WESTCO Car Care Center – Tire Warehouse.

• FTS Training Facility delivered and installed at our training grounds, 1408 West 1st Street. Two days of FTS supplied training currently scheduled for July 23rd and 24th.

Public Works:

• Assisted with WESTCO fire.

• Assisted with installation of fire training center.

• Assisted with bands on the bricks.

• Concrete drain replacement 1313 W. 1st St.

• Concrete pour near the High School.

• Jetting underway.

• Grading, pot hole repair and crack sealing underway.

• Transit 387 riders this week.

• Landfill 408 tons of refuse this week.

Electric:

• Continue to work on the rebuild project north of Lincoln Road on Hwy 87.

• Assisted the Fire department on Tuesday morning at the fire scene, by de-energizing the overhead lines to make the scene electrically safe.

• With the heat and lack of rain, we started the irrigation load control season this week.

• Performed maintenance/repair on a few irrigation well transformer banks.

Police Admin:

• Meetings with the DEA, Datalytics, PAARI, NG911 Funding, and System ID Migration Planning.

• US DOJ Hate Crimes training.

Police Communications/Intelligence:

• Coordinated 628 calls for service.

• Completed 9 report requests.

• 1 firearms permit issued.

Police Operations:

• 5 Child Welfare Investigations.

• 0 DUI, 22 Traffic Stops.

• 3 accidents.

• 0 K9 deployments.

• 163 Building Checks.

• 28 Community Contacts/Business Checks.

• 17 Vacation House Checks.

• 29 Active Investigations.

Animal Control:

• 47 Animal Calls.

• 7 Dog Impounds. 0 dogs currently in the shelter.

• 0 Cat Impounds. 0 cats currently in the shelter.

Code Enforcement:

• 22 Code enforcement issues.

Notable Service:

• Hudson Meeting.

• 2 Tahoes are striped and in service.

• Fire at WESTCO.

Finance:

• Sales taxes received this past week for April sales totaled $200,128 which is over 3.5% higher than 2021.

• FEMA funds of $103,009 were received to cover the deductible for the 2021 hail storm.

• Almost 3,100 letters were mailed to residential customer with refuse services.

RSVP & Senior Center:

• Added three new volunteers this week and the need for volunteers continues to increase.

• The move events at the Senior Center are a big success with great attendance.

• Continued to serve meals in house and deliver.

Parks:

• Spent two full days cleaning up 3rd street underpass, mowing and trimming the south side and cleaning the gutter and sidewalk after the WESTCO fire. Also trimmed and mowed the grass and weeds on the north side.

• All the parks and cemetery were mowed once and the ballfields twice. Mowed Bower one extra time because they were hosting a weekend tournament.

• Loaded accumulated grass clippings at the old swimming pool parking lot into a roll off for disposal.

• Gathered supplies for 4th of July fireworks.

• Met with electrician to get power at the tennis courts for irrigation.

• Sprayed weeds at the softball complex.

• Continued work on small irrigation problems that arise with dry weather and heat.

• Finished painting the concrete pillars in the park.

Library:

• A technician was at the library to assist with improving HVAC performance for the short term until the completion of the upgrade project. He was able to make some improvement in control programming that staff is hopeful will get the facility through the remainder of the hot weather.

• Hosted the monthly Alliance Public Library Book club. There were 13 members in attendance who discussed the book The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave. The next meeting is Tuesday, July 26 at 1 p.m. during which Sooley by John Grisham will be discussed.

• Theater West did a presentation for the kids entitled “The Library in the Lighthouse”, which was lots of entertaining fun!

• Tuesday the Youth book club met to discuss Treasure Island.

• Hosted a Plant Terrarium class in the Community Rooms. We had such a great response to this we are thinking of scheduling a second session!

• On Thursday evening we hosted the annual Summer Reading Swimming Party at Big Blue Bay Special thanks to Shana Brown and Sariah Grant for making this happen. Also many thanks to Edison Red Nest from Alliance Theater for providing popcorn for the families.

Airport:

• Completed FAA inspection and held close out meeting with minor findings coming from the inspection.

• Painting, weeds, and wildlife control is the focus of maintenance staff.

• Completed non-movement training for the haying crew and haying operations will begin early next week.

BBDC:

• The DED HOME Funds application submitted in September 2021 finally gave notice that High Plains CDC (CHDO) was awarded a $500,000 grant to bring in 2 modular homes to the Homestead Addition here in Alliance!

• Kim Wilson, UNL College of Architecture, Mary Emery, UNL Research, and Roma Subramanian, UNMC were here Monday to meet with the 3 Rural Fellow Interns as well as meet with community members. There will be some focus group meetings late September/early October. Interns will begin their final month in Alliance.

• BBDC was asked to help spearhead a Drive-Thru Job Fair in partnership with NDOL – more to come!

• Attended the ARC Park Ribbon Cutting Thursday morning.
