Reflections for the Week of May 6-10

Police:

∙ Worked with Kaytlin on multiple updates to the APD website.

∙ Met with Action Communications about radio upgrades, troubleshooting the AFD channel clarity issues and reinstalling Law Alert on the dispatch consoles. This gives us the ability to rapidly notify all law enforcement officers in the county in the event of an emergency.

∙ Made the decision to end our partnership with GeoComm in the 9-1-1 Center due to constant issues and downtime. Our Central Square program, which we already have, can take on our 9-1-1 mapping with greater reliability, thus enhancing our ability to quickly dispatch lifesaving services. This change represents a significant cost savings to the city.

∙ Attended the 9-1-1 Advisory Board Meeting. Alliance likely has unclaimed 9-1-1 monies owed which we will be following up on.

∙ Attended Council on Tuesday night, introducing our newest officer, Parker Dahlberg. ∙ Attended the department head meeting on Wednesday.

∙ Chief volunteered at the Mobile Food Pantry on Wednesday evening.

∙ Attended the Public Safety Recognition Luncheon on Thursday.

∙ Attended Coffee and Treats at the Senior Center on Friday morning.

City Clerk:

∙ City Council Meeting May 7th.

Fire:

∙ Chief attended the Project Austin App – Transition.

∙ Staff participated the 5th Grade Career Day at Grandview Elementary School. Electric:

Streets:

∙ Crack seal on 24th, Peterson Ct, 5th, Grand, and Anthony.

∙ Remove and replace concrete on Countryside in two locations.

∙ Deliver and picked up barricades for Senior Center.

∙ Assist with unloading of Senior Center food delivery.

∙ Street Sweeping.

∙ Ongoing pothole repair.

∙ Repair and replace 5 total signs damaged.

Water/Sewer:

∙ Rebuilt transfer pump for well at 25th and Toluca.

∙ Assisted Senior Center with food delivery.

∙ Helped set up and take down for employee lunch.

∙ Repaired manhole and jetted sewer at 12th and Grand.

Landfill:

∙ Accepted 248 tons of refuse this week

∙ Conducted baler repairs

HR:

∙ Conducted Police Officer applicant testing. HR continues coordinating with the department regarding vacant positions and scheduling applicants for upcoming interviews.

∙ Processing Seasonal Applications. Available vacancies for Seasonal positions includes Parks, Pool, Carhenge and Golf Pro Shop. Seasonal positions are filling up fast! Apply today. ∙ Assisting employees with Benefit enrollment and other requests.

∙ Onboarding seasonal employees for upcoming start dates.

∙ Accepting applications for Police Lieutenant, Sergeant, Officer, Dispatcher, Full Time Cook, Part Time Transit Driver, and Seasonal positions.

Airport:

∙ All staff participated in a pre-construction meeting for the taxiway/apron rehabilitation project. This project is scheduled to start again on Monday, May 13th with training at 8:30 a.m.

∙ Met with multiple staff from Denver Air Connection in regards to the taxiway/apron project.

∙ Mowed with the new tractor for the first time which required the mower deck to be set up. Ditches on the airport road were mowed and the tractor adjusted.

∙ Repairs completed included taxiway light assembly and mower deck drive shaft ∙ Annual service of the windsocks completed.

∙ Weekly inspection of the ARFF truck completed.

∙ Some of the training with new employee completed was airfield movement training, part one of inspections of the airfield, inspections of construction activities, and NOTAM (notice to pilots) training. This training consists of reviewing all sections of our certification manual, hands-on training, and viewing FAA powerpoint slides.

∙ Completed the process to summarize the little plow truck.

∙ Working on items for grazing leases to begin next week and finalizing the decision on the last capital project which is airline terminal doors.

∙ Airport staff held a meeting to set priorities and discuss summer projects along with FAA projects occurring.

Golf:

∙ Junior Golf sign-up is underway, call the pro shop if you are interested.

∙ The course is in great shape thanks to the efforts of our ground maintenance staff ∙ Repairs were completed on the irrigation well with assistance from the Electric Crew. That assistance was much appreciated.

RSVP & Senior Center:

∙ RSVP and City staff together with Northwest Community Action and Foodbank of America worked in conjunction with to serve 600 people this week.

∙ Continued to serve dine-in and delivery meals.

∙ Received formal confirmation of the RSVP Grant continuation.

∙ RSVP had over 25 volunteers in the community this week.

Parks:

∙ Every irrigation system is energized and repaired as necessary.

∙ All parks and fields were mowed once this week.

∙ Pool was cleaned and reassembled and we started filling.

∙ Power-washed the fountain.

∙ Completed three funerals this week.

∙ Continued mowing and trimming at the cemetery.

Museum:

∙ We hosted the monthly meeting of the Sandhillers History group. It was a great group with lots of interesting history tidbits to share about the sandhills.

∙ The last scrapbooking event of the season was held. If you are interested in joining when we start up again in September, call Becci and get on the list. All are welcome and it is a good way to learn to take care of your family photos.

∙ We have seen a large number of tourists from all across the country. The Nebraska Tourism Passport Program started on May 1st and we have had people everyday.

∙ Our summer hours started on Monday this week. We are here Mon-Fri 8 am to 7 pm. Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 1-5.

∙ We are hosting 5 graduation, 1 shower and 1 birthday party this week.

∙ The KCOW display has come down. Happy 75th Birthday to such a long-standing community asset! Watch for an exciting exhibit to go up next week.

∙ The Museum has had an all over spring-cleaning while it is still spring so we are ready for a busy summer.

∙ The Newberry Gift shop has a great selection of new area souvenirs and many new t-shirts. Remember us when doing your spring gift shopping.

Library:

∙ It has been a busy week with school visits, summer reading preparation, and preparing for the arrival of our prizes! Many thanks to Pat McCauley for his efforts in putting together the first of our adventure vehicles this week! Exciting times to come!

∙ Adult Services Librarian cataloged new materials, planned future programming, hosted the book club at Highland Park Care Center, and added a display for Mental Health Awareness month and National Military Appreciate Month. She also completed the Curricula “Suspicious Events” training course, worked with Apollo and Bytes to install and operate a new label printer, and aided patrons using the computer.

∙ Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn conducted outreach visits to three Head Start classrooms to share summer stories, puppets, music, and flyers for Summer Reading. The kindergarten class from St. Agnes Academy visited the library for a library tour, summer story, puppets, music and creating their own book. Cynthia hosted Story Time featuring “Beautiful Bubbles” and pictures with Alliance Police Department discussing Summer Safety. Cynthia’s LEGO Club worked on their creations this week and she continued to share flyers and final preparations for “Adventure Begins at Your Library” Summer Reading 2024. Registration start on May 20! She also did KCOW announcements, performed organizing and delivering of Book Mobile materials, cataloged new items, and performed backpack maintenance.

∙ Library Clerks Pam Becker and Stephanie Hamilton have been busy processing new materials and assisting with summer reading preparations. We are already seeing an uptick in new cards coming in because of the summer reading program!
