Reflections for the Week of Nov. 13-17

Chamber:

• RUNZA/United Way teamed up for a 10% donation.

• Still taking registrations for the Xmas parade.

• Steady week here at the Chamber, lots of prep for upcoming events and the annual meeting will be held in mid-January.

Knight Museum:

• Our Christmas wonderland is in its final stages of creation! Items are coming in from our fabulous patrons including a 7-foot tree made from a windmill blade that could enhance your yard this coming season. We will be finishing up on the 3 days before Thanksgiving and then opening Saturday Nov 25th at 10 am for viewing until 8 pm. Sunday hours are 1-8, Monday-Friday 8-8 and we will be ending on Saturday December 2nd at 4 pm. We have at least 150 items you would not want to miss at this Christmas Season kick off.

• The Museum Board met for their November meeting. They will not meet again until January.

• We hosted a BNSF training. • The Museum is getting updated and enhanced internet service. • BUT the biggest news is that after 3 and ½ months, OUR ELEVATOR IS WORKING! Our Christmas wish came true. Thanks to everyone for their patience while we were dealing with this issue.

Parks:

• Poured the sidewalks at the 16th Street tennis courts.

• Assembled lights to go on the fountain for the holidays. Thank you to the Electric Department for their help!

• Assembled Christmas trees at the museum.

• Mowed and picked up leaves on the Box Butte north islands.

• Thanks also to the Street Department for their assistance with pouring sidewalks!

Senior Center:

• 25 volunteers assisted the public this week.

• 270 food boxes were distributed to the Alliance Community.

• 86 Thanksgiving Dinners were served on Thursday.

• Remodeling plans were discussed with construction to start soon.

• Director Angie Flesner worked with Tourism to create a Senior Center Face Book Page. It will be connected to the City Website soon.

• Two new volunteers were signed up to assist with local projects. Please call 762-1293 and ask for Angie if you would like to volunteer.

• Attendance has increased for Senior Activities.

Library:

• The Literary Basket auction is in full swing with less than two weeks to go until final bidding on November 30th!

• The library staff would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving next week and remind all of our patrons that the library will be closed November 23-26!

• Technical Services Librarian Emily Nelson made the weekly Bookmobile deliveries, assisted patrons, and updated the website with the new Staff Picks page. She also updated the Facebook and Instagram pages, helped decorate for the holidays, and helped with the Literary Basket Auction.

• Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart cataloged new fiction and nonfiction books, hosted Fiber Arts Club, and an unemployment and job loss assistance workshop with the Nebraska Department of Labor. She also added a new cozy mystery display in the fiction section and aided in the setup of the Literary Basket Auction.

• Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn held Story Time with Thanksgiving Sparkle and shared upcoming events on KCOW. She also organized the book mobile, cataloged new items, and made preparations for December events.

• Library Clerk Pam Becker has helped with auction and bookstore items this week. She also has been issuing many new cards and getting all the new holiday books processed and ready for checkout!

Fire:

• Staff has started upstairs restroom remodel project.

• Staff participated in IAFC-VCOS webinar “Inside the Mind of Today’s Volunteer.”

• 911 Service System Advisory Committee Meeting.

• Staff participated in NVFC’s webinar “Get Schooled: Initiating Partnerships with Schools for Junior Firefighter Recruitment.”

• Weekly Department EMS training.

Electric:

• We replaced 4 “reject” poles. • Installed 4 new poles and replaced three “reject” poles on a single phase line north of Sarpy Road and east of CR 59.

• Assisted Parks Department with install of “winter fountain”.

• Performed switching operations to de-energize Broadwater substation to allow roofing company to replace hail damaged roofing.

• Attended the monthly NECC safety meeting.

• Removed un-used secondary wires from Box Butte-Niobrara alley.

• Rebuilt a section of three phase line east of CR 63 south of Keith Road.

• Kirby attended ACE and MEAN meetings in Kearney, while there also had meetings with Great Plains Power and Sandhills Energy.

• Staff reviewed “switching” procedures needed to de-energize Broadwater Substation, Emerson Substation and 10th street substation to allow maintenance work to be performed, switching will be performed on Monday morning.

Airport:

• Job offer made and accepted for the vacancy at the airport.

• Warehouse inspections have begun.

• Participated in meeting for phasing of seal coat project.

• Tumbleweeds continue to be removed due to wind.

• Broom head removed and blower head installed on Snow blower so we are ready for the first storm.

• Participated in NOTAM (Notice to Pilots) Manager meeting.

• Trouble shoot radio control and lighting issue on airfield. We have a solution until panel can be replaced and have that planned for the beginning of December.

Transit:

• 668 riders this week.

Landfill:

• 295 tons of refuse this week.

• 227 customers this week.

• Extensive bailer repair.

• Expanded tipping platform on MSW hill.

• Laid dirt cover.

• Ongoing work with acquisition of scale, excavator, refuse truck, and baler.

Streets:

• Placed barricades for parade and food drive.

• Ongoing street sweeping.

• Ongoing alley grading.

• Assisted parks department with concrete pour at tennis courts.

• Ongoing CDL training and testing.

• Continued drain cleaning.

• Installation of lights and electrical for all cross walks (all 14 are in place and working).

• Attended planning meeting for installation of crosswalk at 10th and Flack.

Water/Sewer:

• Samples passed on Elkhorn tower and it is back online.

• Replaced broken chlorine injector at 18th and Colorado.

• Fixed broken fire hydrant at New Alliance Bean.

• Received new sewer bypass pump.

• Conducted training on new bypass pump.

• Received first order of drive by meters.

• Trained on installation of drive by meters.

• Completed 1-1/2 water tap for new construction.

• Fixed roof hatch at well # 5.

• Fixed electrical switch and air leak at lift station D.

• Completed amp and volt readings.

• Cleaned all well field well houses.

• Completed 16 utility office orders. • Completed 13 locates.

• Completed weekly samples and chlorine residual readings.

• Fixed chlorine leaks at Elkhorn and Colorado wells.
