Reflections for the Week of Sept. 25-29

Airport:

• Final mowing on airport property outside of the airfield completed.

• Service completed on small mower, loader, and airport truck.

• Mounds and holes filled in safety areas of runways.

• Staff participated in a NOTAM (notice to pilots) manager meeting.

• Future project of Seal Coat of Runway 12/30 and 8/26 engineering agreement negotiated and approved by FAA. Will be on Tuesday’s council agenda.

• Lynn participated in the first Prairie Dog Advisory Board meeting of Box Butte County. Officers were elected and she is Secretary. Next meeting will be October 25th.

• Search begins for a new airport maintenance worker I or II.

Electric:

• We continue to replace poles identified bad by our pole inspectors.

• Worked with electrician on relocating underground service at Schiff Feedlot.

• Installed two temporary services and assisted with hanging a banner at Central Park for Autumn in Alliance.

• Started setting cement forms for warehouse yard outside storage area.

• Performed year- end warehouse electric inventory.

• Repaired four lights at softball complex.

• Repaired street light controller on east 3rd street.

Museum:

• Hosted Advanced Services Inc training.

• Added fall and Halloween merchandise to the Gift Shop.

• Hosted a birthday celebration & hosted a wedding shower.

• Helped a new resident to extensive research on the historic home they are moving into.

• Helped surprised a traveling researcher looking for family, found Great Grandma’s 4th unknown marriage! Who knew!

• Prepared information for an upcoming program “Gravestones have a story to tell” that will be Tuesday Oct 3rd at 5:30 here at the Museum. This will be an exciting look at the history, symbolism and myths about cemetery markings. Don’t want to miss it!

• Making preparations for the 27th annual upcoming Christmas Festival. If you would like to take part in this or help in any way, please contact Becci at 762-2384. We need museum decorators, crafters, quilters or Christmas enthusiasts.

• We are also looking for someone that has an unusual Christmas collection that they would like to display from November-late December.

Parks:

• Sprayed Softball and Laing Lake.

• Line crew assisted us by fixing a few lights at the softball complex that weren’t working.

• Mowing and trimming as many areas as possible.

• Planted new trees at Hal Murray Softball Complex, Laing Lake and the Swimming pool.

• Started blowing out the smaller irrigation systems for winter.

• Continued winterizing the swimming pool equipment and plumbing.

• Winterized Sudman and Bower restrooms for the winter.

• Assisted with preparations for Autumn in Alliance.

Golf Course:

• Hosted the High School Girls Golf Invite on Monday. Thirteen schools attended.

• Made preparations for the Flogger tournament that will be hosted on Sunday. That will be the last tournament of the season.

• Play is beginning to slow down for the season.

Library:

• We have been busy decorating the library for Halloween this week! We also created a display to celebrate the upcoming premier of the latest Ken Burns film, American Buffalo, which will air on PBS in mid-October. If you have not visited the Regional Collection of the library now is the time to do so as we have so many wonderful books that have a tie-in to this film.

• Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart cataloged new fiction books, hosted the APL Book Club, and aided in Cricut projects for the Winter Basket Auction. She also hosted BYOB club, the book club at Highland Park, and Fiber Arts Club.

• Technical Services Librarian Emily Nelson processed the Interlibrary loans, updated the Facebook/Instagram pages and website, and made the weekly Bookmobile deliveries. She also worked on several craft items for the book store and assisted patrons with computer questions.

• Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn held Story Time featuring Autumn Sparkle with Carlie Foster of Keep Alliance Beautiful. She also helped in craft preparations for the Autumn and Halloween Spooktacular with KAB on October 2. Youth Book Club shared discussion of “The Birchbark House” by Louise Erdrich. Cynthia will be announcing winners of the Autumn in Alliance Coloring Contest after tallying votes at the library and through Facebook. She also shared upcoming events on KCOW Open Mike, organized the Book Mobile deliveries and backpacks, cataloged new items, and updated the website and displays.

• Library Clerks Pam Becker and Kris Wilder have been busy helping with Fall bookstore items and processing new account and materials.

Fire:

• Chief attended the Nebraska Municipal Fire Chiefs meeting in Lincoln.

• In-service training on the MSA Lunars Thermal Imaging cameras with firefighting assisting search technology we recently acquired. This included a live fire at the fire training facility.

Chamber of Commerce:

• Attended Dobby Lee’s Frontier Festival, which was fun and well attended.

• Last week we had a great time with the Homecoming Parade and festivities! Better luck next year to our teams.

• Many “Autumn in Alliance” tasks. I hope everyone comes out and enjoys the celebration!

• We have just opened up registrations for the Trunk & Treat Halloween candy bonanza! Print off a registration or come visit the Chamber Office to pick one up!

• We will start planning for our Annual Chamber Members meeting and the Christmas parade as soon as possible!

• Volunteers are always needed for Alliance events, feel free to contact Angie at RSVP for opportunities.

BBDC:

• Attended the Thriving Community, Kids, and Communities Conference in Kearney last week as part of our Community for Kids (C4K) initiative.

• Finishing up end of the year reports, for Fiscal Yearend.

• Attended NEDA monthly board meeting, reported that we have started planning the annual Conference for next June in Norfolk.

• Continuing to work with Career Connections on promoting the Youth Survey’s in our area schools so we can plan our Career Cabs yet this fall (similar to our old Business & Industry day for Sophomores).
