Reflections for the Week of Sept. 6-10

Fire:

• On Monday, FireCatt will begin annual fire hose testing.

• On Tuesday, Sandry Fire will perform annual SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) flow testing.

Police:

• Revised EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) procedures were put into place aiding dispatchers in assisting on medical calls and providing medical instruction over the phone until paramedics arrive.

• Last week Alliance had NO traffic accidents and NO burglaries!

• Held meetings with Region 1 Health and Box Butte Hospital to establish a “clinician in the field” program which will reduce time spent by police on mental health holds and eliminate or reduce unnecessary admissions into the hospital.

• Aided in several large drug seizures which originated out of state with the intention to come to Alliance.

Museum:

• The museum was closed over Labor Day for some much needed carpet cleaning and several rooms of the museum have recently received a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the area.

• We are looking for individuals that might be interested in volunteering in the Heritage Room with filling and making copies or clipping items out of a collection of newspapers. Please call 762-2384 for more information.

• The first Scrapbook Event for the year will be Friday and Saturday. Staff is available to help with the proper way to display, care for and document your family photos for generations to come. Please call 762-2384 for more information or stop by to check it out. All are welcome!

Parks:

• Preparations for Fall with application of herbicide, tree trimming and mowing.

• Trees planted at the Lineman School which will be watered regularly and maintained carefully for the next year.

• Staff worked at the softball complex to prepare the fields for the final softball tournament of the season which will be held this weekend.

Golf:

• Play continues to be steady as we head into the Fall season.

Library:

• The bookstore is coming together for fall! We have a lot of free books in the East entrance for patrons to take home! Drop on by and grab a free book!

• Storytime had a successful launch this week in the new children’s room. It is great for them to have their own space for this activity.

• We have been issuing many new patron cards and are seeing an uptick in circulation.

RSVP & Nutrition Site:

• Attendance at the center continues to be consistent. Meals are served on site and delivered each day. The program continues to accept applications for the cook positon.

• AmeriCoprs has awarded the grant amendment which extends our granting period for the RSVP Program.

BBDC:

• The Rural Enterprise Assistance Project (REAP) will now be offering office hours once a month, on the last Wednesday of the month from 12-2pm at 502 Box Butte.

• We have a new partnership with High Plains Community Development Corporation for a Housing Grant. There will be a Public Hearing held on Wednesday, September 15th from 12-12:30pm at the BBDC Office, 502 Box Butte.

• Rental Assistance is still available for Renters and Landlords! The Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program makes available $158 million to assist Nebraska low-income households that are unable to pay rent and utilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This program is available for renters only, not homeowners. Nebraska will continue to operate the ERA Program until funding is either no longer available from the U.S. Treasury, or until September 30, 2022.

Electric:

• Work continues on the South Potash/South Grand line with completion expected next week.

• Yearly maintenance performed on the generators at the Cody Generation Plant.

Public Works:

• Streets Department has been assisting at the landfill by moving soil.

• Pot hole repair is ongoing, as is the sewer cleaning program.

• Construction of Lift Station “A” saw progress with backfilling around the wet well and forming for the floor. Similarly, the Public Works building saw the installation of overhead doors this week.

• Valve and flow meter repair completed on the well at 18th and Colorado.

• Staff is conducting a comprehensive sign inventory as a preliminary step to creating a sign maintenance program.

• State Officials conducted an inspection at the Alliance Landfill.

Airport:

• Work continues on the 2020 hailstorm insurance claim. This project is going very well and multiple crews are working on buildings. Work has been completed on one hangar and they are working on the second one. They have completed work on 13 buildings with 15 buildings remaining.

• Denver Air Connection’s new flight schedule begins on September 15. The mid-morning flight is getting moved back slightly, meaning that the flight will leave Denver at 11:45 a.m. and then leave Alliance at 1:10 p.m.

• Haying operations on the airfield continues, with completion anticipated next week.

• Airport maintenance crew has been focusing on painting the taxiway markings and the remodel of the terminal.
