Reflections for the Weeks of Dec. 20-30

Personnel:

● New Employee Announcement! We welcome Michael Gomez as a new Police Officer. Michael is from Alliance and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Chadron State College. He is an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He looks forward to giving back to the community where he grew up, and making it a better, safer place to live.

Police Administration:

● Chief and Sherriff attended county commissioners meeting requesting a full-time prosecutor at the request of the Sheriff. Chief providing statistics on cases and the Sheriff ordered her potential pay increase to be reallocated to the County Attorney to help pay for a full-time prosecutor.

● Chief and Lieutenant attended a meeting with UNL robotics kids group regarding package theft and a product they are trying to invent to reduce theft.

Police Services:

● No community members have reported a package theft to date. One bait package has been removed from a property and is under investigation.

● Traffic Stops have increased this week due to an increase of accidents. Please drive appropriately for the conditions.

● 2 DUI arrests were made, 5 thefts, 2 trespasses, 5 accidents.

● Extra patrols and assignments were conducted for school safety due to a Tik Tok video.

● Officer McLaughlin, Sergeant Yocum, Dispatcher Shakes-Yardley received a suspicious 911 call for help, and ultimately tracked down a victim in the street who was unconscious from a drug overdose. They resuscitated him by administering Narcan. The subject was transported to the hospital. Excellent job to all of these staff members for saving yet another life!

Communications:

● 3 firearm permits issued.

● Packages delivered to the Police Department to prevent theft are being retrieved without incident.

● Working on revised way to make accident reports easier and faster to release.

● 304 Calls for Service managed to include releasing all packages for Christmas Package Service.

Animal Control:

● Warning: there is a puppy scam which will result in the scammer taking money and not providing the puppy.

● 3 dogs taken to the shelter and all were returned to owners.

● 20 animal calls to include 1 cat impound.

Fire:

● We have five new nationally certified Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations Level Responders! Congratulations to Elijah Budd, Ben Fretwell, Caleb Hatch, Ted Rozmiarek and Bradan Seidler, and thank you for your hard work!

BBDC:

● Preparing for the 2022 “Perfect Blends”.

● Assisted prospects looking for commercial space for lease and assisting prospects with financing options.

Chamber:

● Nebraska Chamber of Commerce Executives zoom meeting.

● Held the 2nd Annual Parade of Lights Scavenger Hunt.

● Community tour for Box Butte General Hospital.

Public Works:

● Lift Station A in final stages of valve work.

● Water radios installed to date: 166.

● 465 transit riders this week.

● Public Works building- final punch list and walk through complete.

● Landfill 175 tons of refuse; 127 customers this week.

Airport:

● Broom attachment for snow blower has been repaired.

● December numbers are looking good with multiple sold out flights around Christmas and this week too.

● Completed all wildlife reporting requirements and waiting for new permits for 2022.
